I think he did his own camera work on that one as well. Some of the set pieces were later copied in Friday The 13th pt 2, IIRC.

I was surprised at the amount of old-school gore FX in the recent sequel Joy Ride 3.... there are several pretty gruesome death scenes in this movie, and I'd say about 90% of the gore was done using practical techniques (models, prosthetics, squibs, etc). The film itself wasn't anything to write home about, but it was cool to see a horror flick from 2014 that didn't rely on CGI for its bloody carnage. ;)

That was an awful movie! It felt like they thought up the gore and built a movie around those gags...

I haven't seen it, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

I actually can't watch gore movies, but one of my clients did the soundtrack for Phantasm back in 1979, so I pretty much had to watch it. It was very difficult for me, and I won't watch it again.

My old friend Mick Garris directs horror films, but as much as I hate to admit it, I really haven't watched many of them.

I wasn't saying it was a particularly good movie... I was just surprised to see old-school practical effects in a 2014 direct-to-video film. :)

Original 70's Dawn of the Dead, followed by Evil Dead II. Both pretty tame by today's standards, but both left me shellshocked the first time I saw them.

Reading through this thread, I take it we can skip true "indies" such as "Slow Torture Puke Chamber," "Tumbling Doll of Flesh," and "ReGOREgitated Sacrifice" to concentrate on more mainstream fare.

"Men Behind the Sun" (China, 1988). It has been reported that the budget was so low that the director used real corpses for his autopsy and "experiment" scenes. Real rats were set on fire.

"Aftermath" (Spain, 1994). Realistic autopsy-- for more than 20 minutes straight.

"Guinea Pig 4: Mermaid in a Manhole" (Japan, 1988). One of a series of gore films made for Japanese television. The others are straight torture and gore; this one has more artistic pretensions.

"A Serbian Film" (Serbia, 2010). If you can ignore the gore, a profoundly sad and political movie. Extremely well-made.

"Begotten" (U.S., 1990). More disturbing than gory, although it does have razor-blade activity.

All of these movies were or are available on YouTube. If you value quality over gore, just watch the last two listed.

Sorry I can't suggest more. My favorite genre is actually the Italian western.
