Ooh, love The Searchers! Those sessions they did for Sire Records were the best work of their career. I believe 'Hearts in her eyes' was a song by The Records, but The Searchers had the big hit with it.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about the timeline obviously, and for me the Badfinger tunes I know hit harder, have more power, than probably all the Big Star stuff (and I have the Big Star studio albums), so I agree with you. I guess I've never really understood/appreciated Big Star as much as a lot of people.

Yeah, Fotomaker were comprised of members of The Rascals/Young Rascals. The first 2 Fotomaker albums are essential. I really liked the song Make It Look Like An Accident.

Would Willie Nile count as power pop? I think he has those sensibilities. I know that Willie Nile is considered by many to be roots rock and Americana, but he's like Bob Dylan gone power pop.

I like the first two Big Star albums a lot, but I agree Badfinger hits harder and has more power.

"Judy" by The dB's is a personal favorite. Here's a groovin' live version:

...and how can you not love the power-pop/roots-rock hybrid sound of NRBQ?

Here's a pure power-pop tune from the same 1972 NRBQ album Scraps:

    "It's Not So Hard"

Could this be considered "proto power-pop"? It's pretty simple and catchy and came out when complexity (prog) or alternatively country-rock was preferred:

I consider this to be the first ever power-pop tune:

This one set me back on my heels when I first heard it back in the day. Great production.

"Teenage dreams, so hard to beat." I think John Peel has this on his tombstone...

Most of the 100% Fun album is great power pop but this stands out.
