Darn - thought it was peanut butter.

Listening to the Julian Bream mega-box (not all of it) via Spotify.

So, with two lutes in surround, I suppose one is on one side, one on the other, and the poor listener is caught in the crossfire?

Er, seriously, that looks like a promising release, although I'll admit that Turtle records has been slow to crawl into my awareness. How do you like it? What do they play? (Yeah, I know, lutes...I mean, what music do they play?) Would you advise others to, uh, shell out the lettuce to buy a copy?

I haven't heard it. Regarding the balance on the Heifetz disc, I suppose the engineer was trying to achieve a "natural sound"--sometimes the orchestra does swamp the violin! That brings up the question of should the engineer try to improve reality?

I have the Rachmaninov/Stokowski 78s. Those are best of all.

Not necessarily, and I certainly hope not! Ideally, the lutes would be placed mainly in the front channels and only room sound in the rear. Turtle Records usually provides stunning sound, so I will add this to my Want List!

I, for one, would like that. I have bashed away at "North Sanger Blues [Kenny Hall's version of "Deep Elem Blues"] many a time surrounded by mandolins, banjos, fiddles, other guitars and the occasional hammered dulcimer. A lute on either side of me? No problem.

Now listening to CD 1, "Beethoven Symphonies 1 & 3" from "Leonard Bernstein -The Symphony Edition" on Sony. With the New York Philharmonic.

(I see that the Orchestral/Concerto Edition has been taken off of Amazon. Was it just a dream some of us had?) :)

Cesar Franck, Symphony in D Minor. Artur Rodzinski leading the NBC SO, Carnegie Hall, January 2, 1939. World's Greatest Music SR-33 to SR-38. (OK, I'll confess, I cribbed this image from somebody's eBay listing, but my copy of the set looks just like it except for the dinged record in the upper right.)

No, I got it from ImportCDs, for just under $130 plus $9 shipping to the Netherlands. As far as I can see they don't carry it anymore. More recently I also got the big Arthur Rubinstein box from them, for 75 euros all-in or about $100.

CBS also had the early digital Gilels/Mehta Tchaikovsky.

The Russians didn't get to the USA all that often in those days, so the labels would take advantage of what opportunities they had. Gilels also did a couple things for RCA, as did Richter, and Oistrakh did those fantastic Tchaikovsky and Sibelius concertos with Ormandy for CBS.

Wow - I missed that one.

The Walter box started out as a Korean set, but then was re-issued in different (but still first class) packaging out of either the U.S. or Europe. The Szell set also originated in Korea, but I never saw a re-issue, and the prices I have seen were far higher than you paid.

I did get the Rubinstein box for about what you paid.

Just added a request for notification from them if the price drops again.

Do they still carry it? I did a search but couldn't find it.

The Beethoven Symphonies in this box (with LSO) have been excellent, though it will be interesting to compare them with the following set in my collection ...
