Here's a piece to coincide with a season of Lorre's films at the BFI. There was a time when these sort of films were a staple of late night terrestrial television. Now you'd be hard-pressed to find anything other than some dreadful generic action film or an unfunny romcom made after 1995...

You have to love Peter Lorre. He is an icon. I based much of my own personality on him ... or so I am told.

At the 1956 funeral of Bela Lugosi (with whom he had appeared along with Karloff in a 1940 haunted-house horror movie called You'll Find Out), Lorre turned to Vincent Price and whispered: "Do you think we should drive a stake through his heart, just in case?"

    He was the greatest.

Stranger on the Third Floor is, well, one of the strangest films I've seen.

I've always been a huge Lorre fan. I'll have to watch "The Boogie Man Will Get You" tonight.

M is one of my top ten, all time favorite films. The use of sound is incredible, as is Lorre's performance.

That's a shame its one of my favorite Lorre films.
I have a wonderful set called Legends of horror that has a Lorre and is a must own
for anyone into the old stuff like me.
The movies in the set are Mark of the Vampire, The Mask of FU Manchu, Doctor X, The return of Doctor X,
Mad Love and The Devil Doll.

There's an interesting, underrated Lorre performance in the Hitchcock movie Secret Agent. He has a particularly splendid death scene.
