I've always thought that the former girlfriend died, though it's not specified in the song.

Then why does he say it's his pride? It makes a bit more sense if she dumped him, but I guess it doesn't really makes a lot of sense either way.

Well stop, great God, stop there and listen,
Listen to the story 'bout Jezebel.
Her sins were so wicked Jehovah got angry,
Her soul went leapin' and jumpin' into Hell.
Way back yonder in the olden days,
John told Jezebel to borrow her ways,
Said her evil deeds had ruined the land
And repent for the kingdom of God was at hand.
She got mad at John 'cause he told her 'bout the gospel,
Told her servants to boil him in oil.
Well they tell me God looked from the windows of the heavens,
Spoke one word and the oil wouldn't boil.
He raised his hand, creation trembled,
Stamped his feet and time stood still,
Raised his voice, looked down and thundered
    "John! Go do my will."
You got to go to judgement, stand trial.

Then they tell me John moved through the power of the gospel,
Told Jezebel her time was nigh.
On the book of life, her days were ended,
Her time run out and she had to die.
Well they tell me God walked his footsteps thunderin',
He moved his head and his eyes flashed fire,
Clapped his hands and death come jumpin',
Jehovah was angry, somebody had to die.
You got to go to judgement, stand trial.

Then Death come knockin' on Jezebel's door and said
"Come on woman ain't you ready to go?
Of your evil deeds God's done got tired,
You got to go to judgement, stand trial."
Then Death come leapin' she jumped into Hell,
Great God Almighty I heard them tell.
Nine days she lay in Jerusalem's streets,
Her flesh was too filthy for the dogs to eat.
You got to go to judgement, stand trial.
    "Jezebel, mind God's talking,
Says he's tired of your evil ways.
You got to go to judgement, stand trial."

  7. First thing I thought of, and one of the most powerful and affecting songs I know. And amazingly, it was apparently written when Femmes' lead singer/songwriter was a sophomore in high school! According to the wiki for their second album...

Quote: "Country Death Song", for example, was based on a true story from an 1862 news article about a man who intentionally threw his daughter into a well and then hanged himself in his barn. It was written by Gano during his 10th grade study hall. /Quote

Don't know a lot about the Femmes, other than having their first album and a career overview compilation. But the first time I heard this song (or at least really listened to it closely), I was totally blown away.

    He left her bleeding
On the floor in the kitchen
    With cake on her fingers
    And her wedding ring holding.
In her hand was a note
That said the wicked must suffer

    So, so many.

One of the very greatest is Dolly Parton's 'The Bridge'. I'm not going to post lyrics, because you really have to hear the ending for yourself:

Few songs are creepier that The Muttonbirds' 'White Valiant', but you really need to read between the lines to get the full narrative:

You're from the family that moved in up the valley.
It's lucky I picked you up and not somebody else.
We'll have to turn inland: there's been a landslide at the quarry.
Though I say it myself, you couldn't have better help,
If you found yourself losing your way though here.

You can still see the moon
Though it's the middle of the morning.
    You can smell the clay.
Like I say, you can count yourself lucky -
not many people know this way.

Let's turn off for a minute, I've seen something,
    Let's take a look now
Hold on tight, this stretch has needed fixing for years.
Over there, I knew it, you can read these roads like a book now
If you drive them every day.
In the last half hour a lot of cars have been through here.

You can still see the moon
Though it's the middle of the morning.
    You can smell the clay.
Like I say, you can count yourself lucky -
not many people know this way.

    Here we are.
    On that hill over there,
See all the cars parked in the field,
and the crowd walking down the fence line.

You can still see the moon
Though it's the middle of the morning.
    You can smell the clay.
Like I say, you can count yourself lucky -
not many people know this way.

Remember where we left the car.
Remember where we left the car.
    Remember it's a white Valiant.
    Remember it's a white Valiant.

Always gives me chills, that song, and the story hidden within their track 'Your Window' (also from the debut album) might be even more chilling, especially since on its surface it's such a jangly slice of psychedelic pop.

Oh, and the girl in The Special AKA's 'The Boiler' is still alive at the end of the song, but. . . (shudder)

well since you asked, the girl dies in this one.. The girl beckons the guy from the balcony, he goes upstairs and has his way with her, then when they are finished he threw her off the same balcony.

At the end we were collapsing
    right into each other's arms
    It never could be better
that's one thing ya had to know
    The crowd was still applauding
when I threw her off the balcony
She lie there with a smiling face
    when I looked down below

    Railroad Boy
Old folk song done by Dylan and Baez and later Govt Mule.

She went upstairs to make her bed
And not a word to her mother said
Her mother, she went upstairs too said
"Daughter, oh daughter, what's troubling you?"

    Oh mother, I cannot tell
That railroad boy that I love so well
He courted me, my life away
And now at home will no longer stay

There's a place in London town
Where the railroad boy goes and sits down
Takes a strange girl on his knee
Says things to her he won't say to me

Her father, he came home from work, said
"Where's my daughter, what's troubling her?"
He went upstairs to give her hope
Found her hanging by a rope

He took his knife, cut her down
And on her bosom these words were found
Oh dig my grave both wide and deep, place
A marble stone at my head and feet

And on my breast place a white snow dove
Won't you tell the world that I died for love
To tell the world I died of love
Tell the world that I died for love
Wont you tell the world that I died for love

    "Running Bear", Johnny Preston.

Running Bear dove in the water
Little White Dove did the same
And they swam out to each other
Through the swirling stream they came
As their hands touched and their lips met
The raging river pulled them down
    Now they'll always be together
    In their happy hunting ground
