CAM Jazz has announced six new Black Saint / Soul Note box sets for the Fall: Jimmy Lyons, Chico Hamilton, Sun Ra, Steve Lacy vol.2, Ed Blackwell, and Gianluigi Trovesi.

Oh right, wrong bass player. The confusing part for me is I have albums by both and my synapse must have got tangled up last night. Thanks for keeping me straight. They are both excellent players.

NP Paul Desmond - First Place Again. (Warner Bros.) gold label, stereo.

I can't keep up. I haven't bought all the last group yet.

Since I've kept up on the 2 labels since the early 90s (when most were available on CD), there are fewer and fewer reasons for me to buy these. I already have what I want (with the rare exception). Additionally, some of the original CDs sound better than the remasters AND I can think of no 2 labels less deserving of the "buy for better sound" treatment. Again, with the rare exception, many (most?) of these albums were recorded in a way which I'd call "semi-primitive", especially when compared to some of the standard-bearers of the day.

    Interesting.

The Amazon link for Sun Ra says 4 CDs yet I thought that BS only issued 3 titles - Hours After, Reflections in Blue and Mayan Temples (confirmed by a quick look at CAM website).

Wonder what the final one is then?

Yesterday I listened to the Wes Montgomery's Complete live in Paris Concerts 1965 for the first time in a while. Wow! Top shelf stuff this.

As I said, I'm not a fan of using "dated" or "timeless" as labels. Or maybe I would say that all music is "of its time', but at its best, music can give us a "timeless" experience. In fact, I would say that it's not the music that is dated or timeless, it's your experience of the music that could be described that way. And your experience of the same music can vary widely over time. My experience of the Doors music has been all over the map. Sometimes the "combo organ" sound
bothers me. As for the B-3 sound, I love it almost everywhere it appears.

A huge anachronism would be a scene in a novel or film set in a 1920's speakeasy with the band playing jazz fusion on electric instruments. Armstrong's music in 2014 is no more an anachronism that Bach in 2014.

Not entirely the same unless we have recordings of Bach playing his music in the 1700s. And besides, we all have our own interpretations of just about any word spoken since the beginning of time.
