One out of many... the voice is just so unexpected.

Not only does it give me goosebumps, it makes me tear up.

"Can you love a Poor Boy?
    Who can't give you anything
Can you love a Poor Boy?
If love is all he has to bring

A boy whose heart would sing out faithfully
With just your heart for company"

"Can you love a Poor Boy?
Who only knows the taste of tears
Can you love a Poor Boy?
Whose dreams would only turn to fears

A boy with so much love that gratefully
    He'll stand beside you faithfully

Could you settle for a walk in spring
With true love for as long as you live
A love that grows and shows it self the little things a poor boy can give."

    Damn.......

Aretha Franklin "Say A Little Prayer". Just spellbinding - the whole song, but especially towards the end when her voice reaches for the stars.
Dionne Warwick's version is pleasant enough, but she sings it like she's washing the dishes

Between the vocals and harmonies and the twangy poignant guitarwork, Sugar and Spice by the Cryan' Shames is pure magic:

Jane Relf's sultry vocals throughout Face of Yesterday by Illusion, particularly in the choruses. Here it's the piano that complements magically:

    this whole thing... but especially:

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

The vocal "Ah's" at the beginning of The Beatles - Lovely Rita. Got Sgt. Pepper for my 10th birthday in 1972. Didn't have a clue as to what it was about. Used to play that little section over and over. Might just be my favorite Beatles moment.
The background vocals singing "Uncle Albert" in same song. K.D. Lang's performance of "Western Stars" from Shadowland.

I'm convinced that the Richard Manuel's last verse on the Festival Express version of 'I Shall Be Released' is the best vocal ever recorded. Gives me goosebumps every effin' time.

I've mentioned it before but.. the vocal arrangement of "Cabinessence" is as revolutionary or forward thinking( or however we want to phrase it) as anything that gets props from the 60's . You won't see a Rolling Stone issue with "The 100 greatest vocal arrangements", but songs like this deserve to be mentioned with the same reverence as Jimi's guitar solos, etc.,IMO.

Agreed 100% the vocal gymnastics that The Beach Boys do on that song is other worldly.

It made me tear up alittle. My father who recently passed away was a Sinatra fanatic. In the 60s I would setup outside speakers from the screw taps of our Magnavox console so my Dad could have loud music while he swam and tanned in our backyard. So many memmories are rolling over me right now, I know corny. I wasnt bad for a seven year old kid. I would experiment with permission always and when the TV repairman was over(almost monthly and knew his name and was a great friend eventually) I ran over and watched him remove the crushed cardboard back and I'd wonder at with the orange glow of dozens of tubes and the double 12 inch horn mid-tweeter and 15 inch woofers. Sorry for going on again. Great video from the 65 special I purchased for my Dad years ago.
Ohh yeah, for me almost anything Brian Wilson/Beach Boys and since hearing it so long ago the chorus of "In the Court of the Crimson King". Their angelic (King Crimson ayy!) room filling(DVD-Audio) version-great!

I agree with you on that. If Rolling Stone made a "Top 100 Vocal Arrangements" I'm sure BB's would at least take up half of the list. :D

When hearing Big Star's 3rd album, the moment can hit at any time.
It strikes with a combination of the obvious musical elements (Alex Chilton's dispirited vocals, the subtly somber strings, the melancholic bleak lyrics) piled upon the knowledge of the commercial failures of #1 Record and Radio City, horrible label distribution, and no airplay. Despite missing the talents of Chris Bell (who died in 1978, the same year this LP was belatedly released) the songs are a bleary document of the recording sessions that seem to be tearing at the seams. The deaths of Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel in 2010 just adds to the sadness.
It usually hits when I'm fully caught up in KangaRoo, Nightime, or Holocaust.
