When you think of other guitarists of the 70s like Clapton, Hendrix, Allman, Page, and others - Kath is not in the top group.

He was good, but only if one is aware of only 5 guitarists I guess...

I don't want to say best or stack-rank, but I am always happy when one of his tracks pops up on a random play. I will say he is under-appreciated to be sure.

He had a passion like Paul Kossoff another great player who died too early.

I never really thought of him in the top five but without him one of the GREAT bands died.

I've got Leslie West, Steve Hackett, Michael Schenker, Paul Kossoff, and Brian Robertson ranked above him so I guess my answer is no.

"25 or 6 to 4" alone is enough to get him near Mount Rushmore...

...and the end of "Song of the Evergreens" is enough to help put him over the top. :)

I remember when I got the first two Chicago albums when they came out how shocked I was that they had this monsterous gutarist in a jazz and horn oriented band. He was not top five, but pretty close. A monster talent in a number of ways.

    A big YES!

    From another thread:
Starts at 1:35. Reaffirms what an incredibly fluid and emotional guitarist he was:

Considering the huge leap in creativity of guitarists during the last half of the rock era, not being in the top 5 is not a big deal. Not being in the top 100, now that might be significant. But during the seventies, even being among the top 100 would be a huge compliment to any guitarist.

I was listening to the first lp this morning and was again blown away by this band's sound. "Freeform Guitar" doesn't make it for me when we have Sonny Sharrock and Ax Genrich to compare, but what a sound .
RIP Terry Kath, great guitarist, terrible gambler.
