I was going to vote "No" because in the 70s we certainly didn't think of The Carpenters as rock 'n roll.

Then I was going to vote "Yes" because so many other artists and bands that weren't considered rock 'n roll in their day are already in the Hall of Fame. And The Carpenters were great.

So I finally voted "Frankly, I don't give a damn" because the Hall of Fame has become a joke.

They are great and are closer to rock than many already in. So yes.

On a very long drive taking my son back to college recently I was killing time by listening to pretty much everything on my iPod. It was the first time I'd actually listened to the Carpenters in ages. Karen's voice was of course sublime. But what ruined a lot of the songs for me was the incredibly cheesy background vocals and some of the arrangements (I'm looking at you, Richard). I started to think that someone should do a stripped down reissue of Carpenter songs, focusing on her voice. Thots? Anyone?

Anyway, enough rambling. I voted yes. Madonna, Abba, Hall & Oates, Donna Summer, Linda Ronstadt -- the RR HOF is clearly for rock, blues, and pop.

Sure, why not? The HOF has already lost all credibility, just let 'em all in.

    Carpenters are not Rock.

Moody Blues? A more serious oversight.....

I voted ''frankly, i don't give a damn'', i'm neither a fan, nor do i think they qualify as rock ''even of the lite kind'', but at this point The Carpenters have more credibility with ME than the RRHOF.

Yes. Right after the Moody Blues.

Carpenters may not have been hard rock. But they deserve their place in the HOF for their invention of the Power Ballad alone.
"Goodbye To Love" was innovative and most every hard rocker since owes their power ballad to Richard & Karen.

I wouldn't call it a "power ballad" as it never really rocks. It has a "rock-style" guitar solo but it remains light in all other ways - it doesn't get into the belting rock element of the power ballad...

C'mon! It would sound too bland if there weren't any background vocals. It works perfectly for their music.
    Especially on songs like this...

I think the background stuff adds to the impact of her voice. I don't get how you consider some of the greatest backings of all time cheesy.

I wonder if they could ever reconsider the RRHOF so it isn't a joke, split it up a bit ?

  17. If the Carpenters get in, then turtleneck angora sweaters and jars of creamed honey would have to be inducted as well.

  22. I could care less but, honestly, they weren't rock n roll but there are plenty of bands in there that weren't either. They were a terrific duo so let's give them their props and just let 'em in--plus Karen's voice was sublime.
