it's a source of endless amusement to me how many people here are incapable of nuanced discussion

do people not get the distinction between sexual content in pop music 40 or 50 years ago contrasted with sexual content in pop music today? clearly, you're not being honest if you can't see the difference and are instead trying to argue the rather pedantic point that sex is in pop music so therefore there's never a difference. and the gender "argument" is even more laughable.

seriously, guys, lay off the ipse dixit for a bit.

You do know I was joking about the Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy reference, right?

I agree with her but didn't she say in an interview a few years ago, "I still look pretty fantastic with my clothes off"?

Sex has always been everywhere in art, always has always will be. These days, what with the internet and instant everybody knows everything culture, with 24/7 news cycles, it's harder and harder to get noticed. Some people try the sex angle, some just stick with art. It doesn't matter because the good will out and everybody getting their panties in a twist over it is ludicrous. Miley Cyrus and her butt are not ushering in the end of western civilization. And yeah, 60 somethings bemoaning younger artists choice of presentation reeks of get off of my lawn hysterics.

Yes, but sometimes people really do step on your lawn despite the "Keep of the Lawn" sign...and sometimes the use of blatant sexual imagery is an attempt to cover up the relative lack of artistic or musical merit.

On the other hand today's porn sucks badly compared to the good ole vintage classic porn. Mechanical, plastic and unsexy...:hurl:

Sometimes that's true, sometimes it's not. I don't blame anyone for trying to get a leg up in the entertainment industry by using a bit of sex. The audience they're pitching to can figure out if there's any real talent there.

You mean that the envelope has been pushed further? Of course it has, not a whole hell of a lot though since the pretenders broke through. Madonna actually put out an entire nude book of herself at some point in the 80's (which is 30 years ago at this point), and who could forget Wendy O and the Plasmatics? She could teach these kids a thing or two...

Thank God, Jennifer Lopez at age 45, first and foremost, depends on a great pop melody always, not just sex appeal. Listen to this gem of a song. Although, you might not notice there is even a song playing.

Move over, young Pop-Tarts with your booty music videos, Jenny From the Block, 20 years older, shows how to use your ass-ets.

    J-Lo's new music video

that's basically a porn shoot with incidental music

I miss the good old days of my 70s childhood, when a good tune was all a dame needed to make it in the pop biz:

Context is everything. Doing what Bowie did in '72 wasn't just about implying a sex act. Even suggesting a sex act between two men was utterly taboo in 1972 (and it's not exactly warmly welcomed in many places in 2014). Doing what the above picture depicts wasn't going to make Bowie seem "sexier" to the average pop purchaser in 1972, surely?

Now, what's the effect of mimicking fellatio or cunnilingus in 2014? It's not exactly a revolutionary act anymore ... so what is the point? To suggest that porn is mainstream? I'm not a prude, so I can't say I'm offended by what goes in the sort of videos Chrissie Hynde is talking about. I'm damn sure Chrissie Hynde isn't a prude either!

I'm a bit of a fan of Kate Bush, and it's true that she did show off more than a little skin in her "Babooshka" video - but I'm also quite certain that the sexiest video she ever did was for "The Sensual World" ... where she remains fully clothed from neck to ankle:

As for some kind of perceived double-standard ... implying that this is criticism of "sisters doing it for themselves" - well, the criticism is coming from Chrissie Hynde, so take that one up with Ms Hynde. I'm sure she'll be real happy to debate that one.

to the people who still "believe" Hynde is saying women started flaunting their sexuality in 2013-14, you might try picking up a copy of Classic Rock (provided you're capable of reading or maintaining focus long enough to read a magazine article).

Thank you for making clear that my arguments about previois dealings with sex in popmusic and the genderperspective is laughable. I will learn from the wisdom of you and really try and do better in future postings.
Always great to learn the truth for those who knows better.:)
