Same here. But it does speak volumes of just how wonderful the 3 CD set is. Otherwise, we may never have sought out the Complete Black Box (13 discs).

This is a sensational LP from the sixties, and one of the first jazz LP's I ever bought.
"Long Note Blues" is worth the price of admission.
I would also recommend anything by the early sixties Woody Herman band on
Phillips, especially my two favorite Big Band albums (in stereo) of all time "Woody Herman 1963"
and "Woody Herman:1964". The best and tightest bands in jazz history.

Absotively! The OP would be wise to seek these as well as any others recommended by the true jazzbo's round these parts.

    My favorite big band Ellington:

swingin', with great compositions and arrangements, marvelous musicians and solists.

The exact contrary to Glenn Miller imho, who was a poor musician and arranger, never swinged, and that I avoid like the plague. Once again, just my 2 cents.

:biglaugh:That's as truthful and as "well-said" as it gets, and I'm afraid to say (and equally ashamed to admit), is a great indicator of how little America knows about jazz.

Only if Frank were still alive to order a hit on either one of us ;)

There are more innocent repercussions; my remark about Red Garland's playing in another topic got me into troubled PM waters...

Well, I can't see why opinions would get anyone in trouble, per se. Regardless, as I mentioned earlier, there's ton of big band music that the OP has an opportunity to sample. He just better make sure to carry along a VERY large wallet :D

I have decided since this thread to pick up a couple albums unheard. Usually what I'll do for most music that I am considering and haven't heard before is give it a listen on Google Play All Access. If it resonates with me I do a little research on which master/media is the best option. Then I go hunting for the best way to buy it.

Of course there is alway the random buy at the local music store as well.

Man, what you just described could literally take weeks  I just went out and bought it. You take your chances occasionally. No risk, no reward and all that. Good luck. But remember -- go for the music with soul. Duke, Basie are great starting points.
