'the hoople' is my favourite album of theirs.

'The Hoople' is their finest lp. It was also their best line-up. I've never fallen into that Ralph/Allen-era-was-the-best mindset. I saw them at Sheffield City Hall. Bender had Hunter on the deck, foot on his throat. It was amazing rock-pantomime. Give me the Fisher/Bender/Blue Weaver-Mick Bolton collaboration every time. I have bootlegs from that tour from both the UK and the States and I honestly believe they are far better then than anything they'd done in their career up to that point. I don't doubt that perhaps internally something was amiss chemistry-wise at that time because the speed which they elbowed Bender was almost indecent. Still, it's my favourite era for the band. 'The Hoople's the one I go to first. Then 'Brain Capers', then (not technically MTH) 'Shouting & Pointing'. Then the Down N Outz stuff!!

Brilliant. Top tier rock and roll band. Loveable and acerbic, noisy and melodic, Neanderthal and intelligent. Populist and theatrical. Possibly too hard to pin down for mass success, though they came close.

Was waiting on your post, Teddy.

    ;)

Whenever I think of "The Hoople" or "Mott Live" I think of their quad 8-tracks I had in the 70s. Mott the Hoople "sound tricks" through my Realistic equipment. Thought it sounded great!

Can you believe Ian Hunter is now 75?

But even before the Dolls, I used to follow bands around. I followed Mott the Hoople up and down the country. I'd go to Liverpool or Newcastle or somewhere—sleep on the Town Hall steps, and bunk the fares on the trains, hide in the toilet when the ticket inspector came around. I'd jump off just before the train got to the station and climb over the fence. It was great times, and I always knew I wanted to be in a band and play guitar. That was it for me.

Ian is amazing. He's got layers. He and Ray Davies are the two most underrated performers of their U.K. generation, and by underrated I mean that only Jagger and maybe Bowie were better. I'd rather hang out with Ian though.

I only own Mad Shadows, but those live clips were amazing. I've always heard this band was unsung, but was always hesitant to investigate, lest they be a Bowie knock-off, but seems like Ian was always Ian, and no make-up was going to alter his performance.

Will check out some of the other lps from the MTH era indeed.

I like the song "Violence" off the Mott album. "All the Young Dudes" is a great album also.

Great band. The very definition of a rock and roll band for a time. They worse their influences on their sleeves--Dylan, Stones, 50's rock--and deserved more respect and success. Ian Hunter was a superb front man.

They are pretty amazing, #2 is pretty ambitious though! What about Flaming Lips? Why aren't they on the list??
