Favorites, not "best" and off the top of my head, so I'm probably forgetting something. Not including compilations, live albums, soundtracks, 75 minute CD's or double CD's which would make 3 or 4 records sets, like Kramer's The Guilt Trip which, otherwise would be here.

    Big Fun - Miles Davis
    Glass Bead Games- Clifford Jordan
    The Payback - James Brown
    Zeit - Tangerine Dream
    Double Bummer - Bongwater

Hon Mentions -- Double Nickels, Lolita Nation, Zen Arcade, Todd, Tago Mago, Cyborg, Yeti, 1999

Absolutely. The world would be a smaller place if we didn't have the second hour that Lou ran his white noise generator preserved for the ages.

    The Who - Quadrophenia
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
The Beatles - (The White Album)

Those are maybe the only three non-compilation double albums of the vinyl era that I can't imagine pruning down to a single vinyl LP and having something ounce for ounce better (i.e. little or no fluff, Revolution #9 not withstanding).

1- the white album -my favorite album ever...

2- blonde on blonde - Dylan

3- daydream nation - sonic youth

    4-manassas self titled

    5- the wall pink Floyd

    Not easy...

    5 Honorable mentions
    1- tommy by the who
2- Jesus Christ superstar (original 1970 concept album only)
3-all things must pass (triple album that may have been even better as a double)
4-a gift from a flower to a garden -Donovan
5-Mellon collie and the infinite sadness (a massive double cd that could've been the best album of the 90s with a bit more editing).

I gather the OP must not care whether it is studio or live, which leaves The Byrds "Untitled" as a perfect fence rider. But, despite liking it a lot, it doesn't hit a top 5 list.

Before choosing from the usual suspects I will start off with a young'un by this forums standards:
Wilco "Being There". Perfect in every way, not a weak track in the 19 songs. A celebration of rock.

    The Who "Quadrophenia"

    Bob Dylan "Blonde on Blonde"

I guess I only have 3 strong opinions. After that a jumble of The White Album (which isn't perfect) and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road...which holds up quite well, but isn't perfect.

    Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - Freak out
Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East
    Cream - Wheels of Fire

I know they are all 60's albums, but I can't think of any double albums that have come close to these, for me at least.

Silly me, including MCatIS twice. Not sure what I was thinking there...
    1. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
    2. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
    3. Prince - Sign O' the Times or 1999 (depends on the mood)
    4. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
    5. M83 - Hurry Up We're Dreaming

I like that album. Sort of a kindergarten version of Trout Mask Replica.
