Gold, Heartbreaker, 29 and Ashes and Fire might be worthwhile.

Acoustic Sounds does sell some of their exclusive remasters which does make them unique - the Nat King Cole and Lynyrd Skynyrd stuff for example.

They're usually the Hi-Res files converted to high-ish bitrate MP3.

How do you know this. The site describes the files as high res and gives choices in some cases.

Huh? How are DR ratings "subjective"? It's one of the few objective ways we can compare different recordings and masters.

I'm well aware of dynamic vs. data compression, thanks.

Their interpretation may be subjective. Some people are more tolerant towards compression than others.

Interpretation is always subjective. Obviously people complaining about it are quite sensitive to it. I know I am!

Dead.net just lowered their price yesterday; it had been the same as HDTracks until yesterday.

I'm not talking about the files in their free Hi-Res sampler, but the 20 sec. or so samples for each track on the site.

Not sure if its mastering or what then, but some of those samples like the Grateful Dead American Beauty and Workingman's Dead sound much better than my cd versions. Better separation and clarity. Very noticeable difference. Also Bags Meets Wes is another sample that jumps out as sounding incredible, thought those sample may have been the actual Hi-Res but maybe its mastering.

The Dead Hi-res downloads are remixes, not original mixes for Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. The complete collection has the original mixes.

Yeah, Off the Wall was very disappointing. Should have researched more before purchasing.

Yeah, the 20 sec samples is what I am talking about. What makes you think they are mp3.

I just checked the HTML code of the webpage and the links for the samples point to MP3 files.

Of course not - I own them all - on CD and/or LP!!! I was making a snarky remark based only on the DR #'s for the albums I mentioned. A year ago I'd have jumped all over these. Nowadays I want something special if I'm gonna shell out for a CD I already own.

It means when you click on a button to play a sample, behind the scenes your PC is directed to a .mp3 file.

I totally agree. The 96 Khz version really has to pay dividends over the CD, especially considering the expense.
