He rocked on These Boots Are Made For Walking. But that's not the kind of rocking you meant. Thread title is poorly stated.

Sadly it didn´t become popular before the 2002 remix, but here´s the version that should have been used as a link in the 1968 TV special. It features Hal Blaine on drums. The original version (from the picture "Live a little, love a little) from the same year, still has Blaine on drums, but Elvis june vocals are far superior. Enjoy:

What is your def of 'rocks'? I would say a resounding "yes"...when you look at his resume of playing with the Beach Boys, The Monkees, etc etc etc....I would say he rocked pretty darned good !

Hal "rocked" on every hit that he ever played on, but if you mean, did he ever "cut loose", then maybe the following will satisfy?

That's like asking "Did B.B. King ever play the blues?

  7. Has John Bonham ever swung? Because according to Ginger Baker, Bonham "couldn't swing a sack of s***."

Hard rock bands like "Cream/Deep Purple/Vanilla Fudge" were far less likely to use session drummers than bands that were basically groups of singers.
This doesn't reflect on Hal's ability to rock. He could rock as hard as he was asked to by those who hired him.

Ginger Baker ... What does that hack know about drumming? Here is Bonham "swinging TWO sacks of s***"!

I think his drumming is pretty rocking on Jan and Dean's/Jill Gibson's It's As Easy As 1,2,3.

This thread has me digging and I never even heard this song until this morning and I feel that I'm pretty well versed in Herb Alpert!

As much as he is asked to by his clientele. And often on his own.

This may not be the kind of heavy rock that you want to hear but this album has always given me a great amount of pleasure simply because you really do hear the great rhythm section of Hal Blaine & Joe Osborne in a mainly "rock" setting. Picks up steam as the song moves along and though it may be considered "soft-rock" they are not drowned in a sea of production as they would have been on a Beach Boys/Mamas & Papas session.

Wow, I never realized this was released as a Jill Gibson single. Wonder if Jan's vocals were removed here, or overdubbed afterward. Sounds better without them.

No swing there. It's a straight, unsyncopated 4/4 beat.

Well, Ginger Baker is fuller than a sack of $hit. Talented though he is, he's one grumpy old man.

Back to the topic...Hal rocked just fine. To the Op, check out his discography. Just because he wasn't in a harder rocking band, doesn't mean that his playing didn;t "rock" a particular track.

It may be 4/4, but unsyncopated it is not.
