Who's "we," exactly? Here in Berkeley, the hippies pretty much run everything, they just grew up and turned into the establishment.

I think this song had already been used on other commercials.

Oh, my God! This is TERRIBLE news. Musicians should not make money off their recorded material from any source other than album sales. Oh, wait...

Big deal. I saw a commercial featuring She's Not There by the Zombies today. If the artist wants to do it, it's up to him or her.

People actually watch/listen to commercials? Isn't that what DVRs are for? Fast-forward past them! At least mute the sound during commercials. Actually, nobody is forcing you to watch TV at all. If the "soiling" of classic music by being commercialized bothers you, then simply don't expose yourself to the commercial culture.

The true hippies still live in rural communes anyway.

They could do a commercial with Country Joe McDonald leading a new version of his signature Fish cheer....Gimme a K...gimme an F....gimme a C!

I wish the Doors, Neil Young, Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt, and Garth Brooks would all sell their music for commercials. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppeling have all cashed in on commercials. Follow the leaders.

I watch almost no live tv...all via DVR..I scroll through every commercial...I can stand the mind pollution...but a few slip in if I slow with the remote.

    Agree commercial culture is vile..

How many people have actually said "no" when offered the opportunity to sell out? When you can hear the backup beep of the truck full of cash that they are getting ready to dump on your lawn?

Only one I can think of is R. Crumb, who reportedly turned down a million dollars from Toyota for his cartoon "Keep on truckin".

Unfortunately, ideas cannot paid the bills. Only money can. Dino Valenti has been dead for 20 years. His estate, if they own the rights, is after money. Can you blame them?
Btw, that song was used in UK as an on-hold music on Talk Talk helpline few years ago.

It's difficult to think of any recording artist who hasn't had a song of their's used in a commercial at one time. Using songs or even the original recordings in commercials doesn't bother me that much. Several years ago the Kink's 'Picture Book' was used in a commercial that I actually looked forward to seeing. But I had a visceral reaction to this commercial [link below] for a computer game/ app. It actually offends me deeply. I hate it.

I don't care if artists license their music to make money. It doesn't cheapen it for me in the slightest. I also don't notice unless someone mentions it here because I rarely watch TV and even then I pay zero attention to commercials. Get paid, artists - you deserve it. Especially when so many people steal, trade, share (rather than buy) your music these days.
