I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Whitney. Great voice. Her first 2 albums are quite poppy, so they're my favourites! My Love Is Your Love from 1998 might be a better place for you to start. And it contains a duet with Mariah! Nice link there!

I'm reading about her 'amazing voice', etc...
It's typically the kind of Idols-ideal that doesn't do anything for me at all, it leaves me completely cold.
Give me a Cpt. Beefheart over 'technically gifted' any day.
At least I can hear any emotion in it.

You know I can't start in the middle I always have to start from the beginning.:D I'll give her music a listen.
Any other female pop singers we're forgetting?

I expect to be hearing All I Want For Christmas Is You again very shortly!

Mariah's version is a lot better than Michael Buble's!

Janet Jackson? Diana Ross? Why can't I think of any more recent ones?!

Well her self-titled debut album was one of the biggest sellers ever at the time. Chances are you know a good half of it from the radio...

    You're very thorough, I know!

My Love Is Your Love has more of an r and b vibe, which I thought you may prefer.

Of course it's 16 years old now so probably will seem horribly dated!

Janet Jackson is actually the next one on the list. :) Let me guess you stopped listening to her stuff at "Velvet Rope"? :p

None of those songs ring a bell but I'm sure once I give them a listen everything will click.

The only 2 Janet albums I have are Rhythm Nation and janet.

I did hear Control many years ago and should probably pick it up.

Although I liked "On the Floor", I'm not a JLo fan. But she played the Singapore Grand Prix so We watched. She was working, sweating and just . . . Nasty. Definitely tightened up where Mariah let it go. Glad I stayed.

I've heard that Control & Velvet Rope being her artistic masterpieces. So I'm surprised that you haven't given them a chance yet.
You've at least heard about them right?

I never loved Whitney's albums, but some of her singles are just incredible, especially where she mixed restraint and passion -- like "It's Not Right, but It's Okay" from My Love is Your Love; or "Exhale" from the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. I think she was an enormously better singer than Mariah Carey ever was -- she just brought a lot more emotion and depth to a performance. Mariah's singing is all flash and all surface.

I'm still a little unfamiliar with most of Janet's music but I do remember hits like these.

Bolton has a couple that give it a run for its money. Pun intended.

I can sometimes recognize the over the top screeching when hearing her in a store or something, but a far as naming a song? No.

Haven't heard it, but have heard two of her songs: Without You and Against All Odds. Both covers and both horrible.

I have heard Control, probably not long after it was released. I'll get it again in due course. Velvet Rope I do know about. I used to work with someone who was a big Janet fan. I may have heard it once, but don't remember much about it.

I'd agree that Whitney was a far superior singer. To just about anyone at the peak of her powers. Later on she caught the dreaded over-singing bug too, though.

Wow! Janet had some major hits in the 80's! Her and Madonna were at the top of their game chart wise and they both fell off around the same time. (early 00's)

Madonna and Janet were neck and neck for a while. The latter overtook the former with her janet. album in 1993. Madonna was inbetween Erotica and Bedtime Stories and had gone off the boil a little at this point. The janet. album was absolutely massive.

Her first three albums are pretty great. After that she's very hit-or-miss to me. Her voice has been ruined for years.
