Hopefully it means actually competent transfers for the Hammer classics, as its been completely hit or miss with the foreign editions that are scattered across distributors. I'm especially looking forward to seeing what WB will do with Curse of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula and The Mummy. To be honest I hope they are released by the Archive because that will mean maxed out bitrate on a BD-50.

Maybe with this push for Warner Archive we'll finally get an North American release for The Devils. (Uncut, but if BFI wasn't allowed to,...)

I WISH (oh HOW I WISH) for a complete run in chronological order of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies (or the Disney shorts), nothing would make me HAPPIER !!!
Why oh WHY don't Disney and Warner Brothers do this !!!
I haven't sat down and looked at how complete the Walt Disney Treasures releases are (I Have all the ones with cartoons on them), but I am assuming they did not release all the cartoons...

The most conspicuously absent Warner Bogart titles on Blu-ray are "The Big Sleep", "To Have and Have Not", and "Key Largo". Maybe they will do a complete Bogart and Bacall set and throw in "Dark Passage" as well.

Disney is probably more complete, but I'd rather have the rest of the Warner Bros cartoons before Disney finishes up.

Does anyone else here have Warner Archive Instant? They have tons of HD titles that aren't on blu-ray (I'm going to check out"The Curse of Frankenstein" which they just added in HD)

I have all of these, what I am wishing for is a COMPLETE run of the cartoons, the Warner Brothers stuff is obviously nowhere near complete, with Disney, I am not sure, but if I get bored I will pull out "Of Mice and Magic" and see what are missing (I am guessing there are quite a few)..

Disney is a lot closer to complete than WB.

This wikipedia link shows every Disney animated short and if and where it is available on DVD:

    Similarly for Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies

For Walt Disney, they are in pretty good shape once you hit 1929, For Looney Tunes there are tons of cartoons missing in action....
Makes me want to see the other cartoons from that whole time period, 1920s to 1960ish, Columbia picture cartoons, the producers of cartoons that went under and not seen anymore....
I have a DVD of French cartoons around here somewhere....lots of good stuff out there, but still tons of stuff missing in action....
The UPA set is already out of print... and they finally released the Magoo cartoons.....

hello Jupiter8...very interested in your opinion of how COF looks on the WAI...as you know the blu ray was a disaster Please fill us in on what the aspect ratio is, quality of print, color and does it have the missing close up eye ball scene? thanks!!!

Well, unfortunately, not a very good copy-obviously from a print (dirt/scratches) and missing the eyeball scene....also not the 1.37:1 version-looks cropped to 1.66:1 or even wider :( -why is it so hard to do these right?

  15. I agree particularly given their treatment of The Exorcist Anthology. My biggest concern aside from bit rate is the proper framing for Horror of Dracula. I'd also love it if they would license the extras from the UK edition but I doubt that will happen.

Maybe because 5x3 (1.66) is the intended aspect ratio?

Bob Furmanek is on this forum somewhere; I'm sure he'd know the answer.

1.66 is the overall intended aspect for the early Hammers, WB is using their old DVD transfers which cropped to 1.78 and misframed HOD.

It looks more severely cropped than the 1.66:1 blu ray frame grabs I saw on the web- and it definitely isn't the non-matted Academy 1.37:1 version which is also on that-not sure if the "HD" they are advertising is just the old DVD transfers (seems like misrepresentation)

Yes I would love to see the top of Christopher Lee's head in Horror Of Dracula as well as the footage that was found in Japan a few years ago.

It took me a second to "get" this but when I did, LOL. Sammy Davis was a great talent. George Burns late in life said what you did, that Sammy was the greatest all around entertainer he ever saw. That's immensely high praise from someone who had seen 'em all over his 100 years.
