I take it you mean Heavyweight Champion. That's a good Van Morrison album, though.

I have the London set and the solo Tatum box, the latter on vinyl but my favorite Oscar Peterson set is the 4 cd set of Exclusively For My Friends. I wish I had bought the vinyl versions as I think I've come upon most if not all of them in the last ten years. The SQ on the CDs are excellent but I've never heard the vinyl so I don't know anything about them.
I find the playing on this set more relaxed compared to his studio recordings.

Ooh I didn't know there was a box set of the vinyl set and still available as it appears that there has been a reissue. I should have known. I bet sounds terrific. I may have to get one of those.

I'df I had to narrow it down to only a few it would be the Complete Riverside Recordings of Bill Evans and Miles Davis Quintet Live At The Plugged Nickel. Those are the two that I would miss the most if my house burned down.

Fascinating! Can you tell us what is contained in this box (I see Strata East mentioned)?

    My favorites are:

    Miles Davis, Cellar Door box
Miles Davis, Jack Johnson box (repetitive but such fantastic playing)
    Miles Davis, Plugged Nickel box
    Ahmad Jamal, Mosaic box
    Keith Jarrett, Blue Note box

I think Strata East and Tribe are mentioned on the obi because they are also indie jazz labels. The only thing this box contains are the complete recordings of the Black Jazz record label which comes to 20 albums:

Here is a pic of all the albums which come in mini-lp sleeves and fit nicely in the box:

Exclusively For My Friends is certainly up there - better sound generally than the London House tapes.

The SACDs are excellent (DSD layer that is - the CD layer lacks a little warmth) but I listen mostly to the original CD set. Not quite the resolution of the DSD but the tonality is nice and natural. Also, the SACDs are out of spec or something and have ocassional playback/read issues on some players (like mine, apparently!). The only real difference otherwise is a small rejig of playing order for the original 1992 CD set.

I like it all - studio, living room, club dates, concerts, TV...

    :)

  24. Hell yeah!! Almost the *exact* same titles I was going to post!

The Joe Henderson "Milestones" box is especially fantastic, often overlooked, and highly recommended!!

I would add the two Andrew Hill 'Blue Note' Moasics -- and those, plus the Henderson, plus those two 70's Miles boxes -- that just might be my top-5 jazz box sets right there.
