Let me balance my previous superficial observation by noting that one of the things I admire about the show is that they don't just make up science-y sounding techno-babble, but actually base the comedy on real scientific fields and research.

For example, I love the fact that Sheldon has moved on from string theory to dark matter research. String theory was a hot topic of research for decades and esoteric enough to interest someone like Sheldon. But ST has been in the doldrums for some time now (due to a multiplicity of possible solutions and no testable experiments for verification), while things are really heating up now with dark matter searches and dark energy research (unrelated to dark matter). So, I can totally see Sheldon moving on to this new frontier.

I made a comment in an earlier post that I felt the show was heading downhill, but I certainly don't think it has had a "jump the shark" moment or anything like that. I do think it has reached a point were it is a little too cluttered with characters in most episodes, and that tends to limit any attempt at a story line. I'm 59 years old and when I watch the show now I keep flashing back to when I used to watch Newhart. The same thing happened there when Larry Daryl and Daryl and several others had to do their walk on minute, even if they were not in any way involved with the episodes story. That is what I see now on this show. It is probably written in every actors contract that they get to appear in every episode but often times it's just a walk on with no connection to the story line. When you are starting with only twenty one minutes of show to begin with, there really isn't any time to waist. I just feel the show is better when it revolves around Sheldon and Leonard with the others just used to freshen things up from time to time.

Put me down for not supplying them with that cow. This has been the worst season by far. My rating of this show has dropped each episode this season. I keep thinking, the next one will be better but you can only keep saying that so many times. This week was the last time that I say it.
They have one episode left to "entertain" me or I'm moving on to something else.

I have missed some of the episodes this season and have not even bothered to wath them on demand. The episodes I have seen have not been nearly as good as previous seasons. I don't care one way of the other about seeing the new episodes of this show anymore. However, I do watch the reruns of past seasons fairly regularly even though I have seen each of those episodes several times.

They run reruns here and I watch them all the time. Late last night (before Conan) I watched a show from 2011 that I didn't remember ever seeing before and it was great.

The show has lost the "it" that used to make it funny. (If I post possibilites, I'll get shot down for wanting the show to stay the same) To me it's like when Two and a half Men was on with Charlie Sheen. The vocal people who didn't like Sheen or the material made their points, and that was fine. I didn't tell them they were wrong. But this show is the same. I liked Two and a Half Men when Sheen was on, I don't like the show now. I used to like TBBT, but I don't now. It's just not funny anymore.

Trying to break down why something isn't funny is pointless IMO. Comedy is like porn, you know it when you see it.

The problem I have is Bernadette always throwing in Howard's face
how she makes more money than him he can't buy what he wants
she's to bitchy and bossy. I would never married her.
I think divorce from is in order. Basically Howard's
spayed and neutured. His character is rather empty now.
I enjoyed his character when he was desperate and a bad womanizer.

Bernadette is hot, she could boss me around any day!!

I thought Sheldon and Raj were funny together in this episode. I think for the most part the writers have done a good job of juggling and fitting in the extra characters. But if there's one thing weighing the show down for me it's the Leonard and Penny dynamic. Obviously it was central to the show from the first episode, but it's just not working anymore. If Penny can grow up a bit maybe Leonard can stop acting so whipped, it's played out!

You have to admit that on this week's episode , after Penny tells Leonard that she sold the car and Leonard did his usual "whimpy, how could you do THAT" face and then she gives him the photo of her by the car, that was, in my opinion, one of those great moments that makes that relationship work. Fans love that kind of silly crap and it saved an almost otherwise boring episode. Again, there are a few fans in this thread that will evidently take almost anything that the writers hand them and find it funny. I'm clearly not as easily amused.

Yeah there are times when I tire of his wimpy attitude. Fair enough he's punching well above his weight with respect to his fiancé but geez you've had her for awhile so cut back a bit. It just grates on me sometimes.

I still love the show, however, I do agree about the Howard/Bernadette dynamic being...off. Here, they're going for cheap laughs with Howard being emasculated by his 'superior' girlfriend, thus acting like a little boy who gets stars. They really need to stop that because it's making Howard pathetic and Bernadette a petty, unlikable b**ch. I preferred the previous dynamic with the comic-book store guy hitting on Howard's mom.

And there you have it, as a fan with a different opinion, I found Stewart hitting on (and living with) Howard's mom pathetic and going for cheap laughs! Even though I know that none of us have ever actually seen what Howard's mom looks like, the reaction that all of the characters on the show display, when Howard talks about her, we all get a pretty vivid picture that she must be a pretty unattractive woman, with bad habits. Even as desperate as Howard used to be before Bernadette came along, I can't believe, even for a moment, that Stewart would want anything to do with his mother, other than companionship and anything past that is "cheap laughs".

I agree. Stewart should go back to the comic book store or just disappear. The thing with Howard's mom is a good example of what I talked about in an earlier post were everybody has to appear in every episode no matter what.

And what's wrong with wanting companionship and to feel appreciated for once in his life (as it seems)?

Stewart is comedy gold, I love that character. But I LOATHE Howard's Mom and have since day one. Every scene with her and Howard screeching at each other makes my skin crawl. Except for one time when she screamed at Howard and Bernadette screamed back in the identical voice, that was funny!

They should re-open the comic book store to get Stewart back in the mix! And get rid of Mrs. Wolowitz!!!

Nah, I like Mrs. Wolowitz. Cheap laughs perhaps, but still funny. Not all laughs require knowledge of condensed matter physics! :D

It's sad that Howardm married smaller yet more attractive version of his
Mother. That joked has been played out.
I agree get rid Howard's Mother, she's very close to dirt nap.
As huge as Howard describes her.

So what do we think about the Oct 30 episode?

I thought it was pretty good. Odd that the Bernadette/Amy disagreement didn't really resolve itself.

Billy Bob Thornton has always seemed like a real jerk so I wasn't excited when (and it took me a few seconds and hearing his voice) I realized he was the Doctor. And though I actually thought he was funny, he also seemed legitimately deranged and threatening in the role. It lost some of its humor for me because it seemed like these ladies were in danger.

The guys engrossed in Donkey Kong at the end was a nice nod to why we liked them in the first place!

Member Deesky chimes in to comment that he enjoyed the episode muchly. Nice guest appearance by BBT playing it understated and delivering some funny zingers, like the comment about Gene Roddenberry's vasectomy and Howard replying - he really went where no man has gone before.! :D

I laughed out loud at Sheldon' comment re Leonard connecting with Donkey Kong because it was an odd shaped man chasing a blonde. One of the few moments I've enjoyed this season.

Billy Bob was great. I haven't enjoyed much this season, but he and his "one mississippi, two mississippi" counting was very funny. Other than him, Howards warming up before practice throwing the first pitch was about all that has made me laugh this season. The show works fine as long as you keep Penny and Leonard apart. Once they get together and start talking, the show comes to a complete grinding halt, imo.

So, November 6th episode? Given the participation in the discussion about the previous episode I expect this will break the bandwidth bank!!!!

I thought that was a really good episode, and it didn't seem coincidental that it didn't deal at all with Penny's new job. I personally am not enjoying that change. My initial reaction last night was, 'why are these people so excited about a prom'? But it ended up being very funny. And for the first time in a long time I enjoyed Penny and Leonard together. In fact, I felt like they had some reactions that reflected genuine affection between the actors, not just their characters; particularly when they first got to the rooftop.

The limo scene with the (2nd) cousin was hilarious!

Sheldon to Amy: "I love you too".
<Amy in a panic attack rushes to Sheldon's room to lie down>
Sheldon to Amy: "Just because I love you doesn't mean you're also allowed in my room!"

    Good stuff all around.
