I think Greendale sounded best on the studio album, with just a 2-man Crazy Horse (no disrespect to Poncho).

It has a great stripped down feeling, and the only thing I can compare it to is Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, so obviously I mean this as a compliment of the highest order. Mostly one guitar, one bass, drums.

I would put it to Goombay and others:
Greendale is a better album than you remember. It's better than I remembered! Give it a shot on some rainy night. Yeah, maybe one clunker, but wow overall this thing really impresses! Neil's guitar is FANTASTIC. Wish he'd do more with THAT sound! yeah!

I liked Prairie Wind sine the day it came out. Definitely among his best.

Goombay isn't interested in revisiting. Goombay is only interested in being right all the time.

I find the record repetitive and boring. He should have listened to Bono. Songs are dragged out forever just so he can complete the narrative. Picture "Tommy" if it were only 10 tracks long. I admire his imagination and enthusiasm for the project, but I find it a major bore. I've tried. Really I have. Be The Rain. Be The Rain.

"Fork In The Road", on the other hand, is a masterwork.....

I enjoy the Greendale story and the narrative.

But I think some of the songs themselves really work better OUT of the narrative, Bandit, Carmichael and Leave the Driving. These are incredible songs by themselves. Bandit is the best of the bunch.

Check out these lyrics from Leave the Driving:

    "Meanwhile across the ocean
    Living in the internet
Is the cause of an explosion
    No one has heard yet"

I have a good idea what Neil is talking about here, and it scares me!

Neil Young should listen to Bono? Good god, that's a terrible idea.

i find it like the other fellow repetitive and boring. the tracks lack tunes. this should not be surprising as many many reviews and commentary noted as much back in the day when it came out. it was followed by living with war which was the same concept.

Well, like I said, Fork was the one I never picked up, but your opinion nudged me to pull the trigger (it didn't take much, really). I had listened to it only on my iPod. Much, much better presentation on vinyl. I'm glad I finally added it to my collection. Still waiting for a copy of Eldorado to fall in my lap.

The vimyl has dropped to £103 on Amazon UK (better get in quick!), while the 2CD deluxe edition is the number one seller in world music...

What do you think he is referring to here. I love these lyrics and most of the album, but I am not sure what he means by this phrase.

I think that While I watch you Sleeping reminds me of Ramada Inn.

What is the smaller acoustic guitar Neil is using on A Letter Home and on new song While I Watch You Sleeping? It has a big rough around the edges sound to my ear.

Yes, there are some melodic similarities between the two.

Agree! Love Fork in the Road! Best thing he'd done for years until Psychedelic Pill, which keeps growing on me....and if you're being sarcastic, the hell with ya!

Late reply, but I just heard this song. I think it's beautyful. It reminds me a little bit of One Of These Days melodically.

Doesn't work in Denmark either. The same can be said about the insane asking price for the vinyl...
