Drum sound is imperative to an enjoyable song/ album for me. I like Mitch Mitchell on Little wing and Bold as Love in particular.

Whenever I hear Al Jackson Jr. hit his snare I feel like I've heard the perfect drum sound. Not technically "rock", perhaps, but close enough for me.
I dig many of the aforementioned usual suspects but Jim Capaldi, Spencer Dryden, and Hugh Grundy are a couple of other guys I always sit up and take notice of. No shortage of excellent stick-men from that decade!

The unforgettable B.J.Wilson from Procol Harum. And let's not forget Bobby Elliott driving those great Hollies sounds of that era.

As far as strictly sound goes, I can't stand the way Ginger Baker's drums were recorded. They sound like cardboard boxes. I love the way Carmine Appice's drums sound during You Keep Me Hanging On, among other songs.

I love the drums on the Beach Boys' Surfin' Safari - right from the very first snare crack at the top. And they're mixed perfectly as a rhythm instrument, and although there's hardly any kick drum I don't miss it at all. Denny accidentally clicks his sticks at 1:22 - a modern producer would edit the life out of that.

Michael Clarke was so underrated as a drummer, and I've always particularly liked his sound on Gene Clark's Tried So Hard from 66/67. He's got such a great spritely trash beat style with an energetic but light touch. My Back Pages by the Byrds in another great sounding drum track.

As I really young kid I was grabbed by the drumming on the 4 Seasons hit records. Still sounds great.
