I'm talking about if they chose to breakthru online and had no Brian Epstein to force the issue. If they uploaded their music to every single mp3 site. Bandcamp, last.fm, reverbnation, soundcloud, youtube, My Space, facebook, spotify.

If somebody had to discover them to make it to a higher level, would that happen ?

I say no. Because the music biz does not care at all about finding new talent now. It's all based on auxilary bs.

Yes they would, because their early work in particular was very hook-laden. It's one of the reasons why they are still popular to this day.

But would they have been as popular as they were in the 60's? Imo, no they would not because those days are long gone. We have to assume that their sound would have been a more modern sound, with the foundation essentially intact, and again imo they would have found a fanbase. But I don't think there would have been a 2014 version of Beatlemania.

Just out of curiosity, what's the "auxilary bs" that made acts like Arctic Monkeys or Janelle Monae so successful? And Adele isn't really my thing, but she's done pretty well for herself, and she's relatively new. What the bs there?

Disagree. These days the sieve doesn't work. Few would ever hear of them under the circumstances I mentioned.

We would have to assume that if they were not around to change the world of music, that we would still be faced with the dreadful stuff that they were born to wipe out, so their second album could have certainly broke them again.

If it was with their first UK album, possibly not. The second UK album was much better, contained more of their own songs and would have stood a chance.

Yeah that, or another band would've assumed The Beatles' mantle.

AnswerED w/a Q: do #1 artists survive on online today?
    If not, no.
    If yes, yes.

Like "The Beatles" having the #1 on Billboard's "Hot 100"continuously for three and a half months as well as three consecutive #1 singles, holding all five spots of the "Hot 100", & having fourteen songs in the Billboard "Hot 100" at once.
So keeping just those sales records in mind, combinED w/all their other sales, does that translate too $uccess today?

Taxes [95% Super Tax "Taxman"] killed 'The Boys' profit margin back-in-the-day; would on-line profits be taxed the same today?
Cause maybe they would actually kept more of a percent of total sales, then back then.

Seriously - which artist, purely on their own and doing it independently via BandCamp, Reverbnation, Spotify, CD Baby, etc. (all the independent routes), has broken through?

Without corporations to back them up, The Beatles would have amounted to nothing.

    Sad but true.

I think they would they would still be successful. However given the current economics of the music business I don't think they would be able to stop touring like they did in 1966.

The real question posed here is "could the Beatles have made it without Brian or another talented manager" and the answer is that the odds would have been highly against them in any era, as is true for any other group.
