    And this:

    To DrJ:

Sounds like something from Adult Swim, or an Acid Mothers Temple And The Melting Paraiso UFO album. Actually, Adult Swim, which I've never watched, contains a good bit of music composed by the electronic artist Flying Lotus, who happens to have an Aunt named Alice Coltrane and a cousin in one Ravi Coltrane.

    My preferences still lie here:

Well, I also got a package in the mail today. Wait, that sounds incriminating. Including this SACD from Analogue Productions. Gonna monkey around with this next.:)

Excellent sound quality, the noise floor is low, the dynamics are there, great instrument definition and imaging.

And then there is the actual music, which is fabulous. Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek are excellent leads, but damn - the rhythm section is something else; these guys really hold it down and drive. The opener, "Personal Mountains" smokes, and is worth the price of admission by itself. "Innocence" might be a bit smooth for my taste, but it is well executed and certainly doesn't take away from anything here. "So Tender" brings things back on track, and again the bass and drums move things forward, so even if the sax lead isn't fully my bag, the rhythm section and Jarrett's keys shine. With "Oasis," the set goes right back into my wheelhouse and stays there with "Chant of the Soil." As with the opener, I played these songs immediately after first hearing them because they are that exciting to me, and there is that much to soak in (more great bass and drums). Ditto for "Prism," which slows things down a bit, but is simply gorgeous, and the bass and piano shine. Judging from the crowd reaction, "New Dance" is a well-regarded Jarrett tune; it is an energetic and fitting way to end the set...

Sometimes taking a chance on an album I know nothing about pays off sweetly, and this is definitely one of those times...

Glad to see you digging into Jarrett! If you like that (his Euro Quartet), try some of the American Quartet recordings (with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian -- they recorded for both Impulse and ECM). This is a personal fave:

I very nearly picked that up yesterday but it was pricey and saw this which I've just been playing.

Now: Jimmy Raney - Two Jims and Zoot - Mobile Fidelity/Mainstream. A 1964 session with Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone), Jimmy Raney (guitar), Jim Hall (guitar), Steve Swallow (bass) and Osie Johnson (drums). A pretty soft-toned date, but certainly not bad, though I don't think Osie Johnson fits in well.

(CD Hat Art 2-6189) - IMO this features some of the best playing by bass player Jean-Jacques Avenel ever recorded

Inspired by the recent discussion of this one, revisiting - and its as good as I remembered it, wonderful, lyrical yet driving bop, with everyone on top form. I have a 1980s Denon CD (jewel case, not mini-LP sleeve) issue that sounds nice.
