Sheer class. I think this and Synchro System are classics.

I'm always listening to vintage world music of many stripes, especially recordings from the 1920's and 1930's. My favourite recent release of this sort of thing is "Longing for the Past" - vintage south east Asian music.

That said, I've been getting heavily into MPB from the 1960's and 1970's, with my top choice for the moment being "Tabua de Esmeralda" by Jorge Ben. Not an easy one to track down, but very well worth the effort.

If you can find it, Bem–Vinda Amizade is one of my favorite Jorge Ben albums. I think his mid- to late-70s stuff is uniformly fantastic. Africa Brasil is his high point, of course, but you can't go wrong with any of his work from that era.

What other MPB have you been listening to?

Good to know, thanks for the recommendation! Most of what I've got is "white-bread" material, but I love it all. So far I've got:

    Acabou Chorare
    Construção
    Clube da Esquina
    Courage
    Gal Costa
    Gilberto Gil 1968
    Transa
    Os Mutantes
    Mutantes
    Paêbirú

Any other suggestions are of course greatly appreciated!

You're off to a good start! In addition:
    • Caetano Veloso's early stuff is essential.
    • Everything Tim Maia recorded in the 70s is worth a listen.
    • Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa's 70s discographies are worth digging into deeply, much like Jorge Ben. I like Gilberto Gil's Expresso 2222 quite a lot.

I'll definitely have to do more digging, thanks for the suggestions. I'll just add these to my very long wishlist, hoping that I'll get around to them soon enough. In the meantime I have lots of MPB to love already.

This album is absolutely incredible. Probably the best African reissue I have heard in a long while.

A great compilation! Listening to it right now.

Strut did it again, compiling fantastic but obscure tracks. Paul Simon would be proud.

Awesome... I've heard volumes 1-3, and all are very good. So many great recommendations in this thread!

Voodoo Funk is a great label. I have both of those albums, and would recommend you get This Is Marijata. However, you probably already have it, judging by your previous posts and taste in music!

hell yeah, that's a great one also. Anything that Voodoo Funk puts out is an automatic purchase for me. I mean, the name of the label says it all... VOODOO FUNK!! What a great album cover on the Marijata LP:
