Here's the Canadian MCA CD, which, if memory serves, is a clone of the original issue:

This seller has a few copies of the 2011 SHM CD:

Probably more of both out there, but those showed up quickly.

IMO, The Swansea recording isn't representative of the live Who sound from 1975-76. It was mastered to sound too pretty. Listen to the rough and rockin mono version of Roadrunner from Pontiac. That's what the recording should sound like.

But...I don't much care for that recording :)

For Pontiac? I'd be surprised if there was. Considering they apparently just used a mono video master for TKAA. Which make John's bass overdub all the more out of place.

Then again, I'm not one to say "never".

I'm hoping for any show from that tour in better quality. I like the earlier shows which had some rarely performed songs on that tour like Drowned.

haven't seen the movie in many years so please remind me, the Pontiac footage is the one with the very slow performance of "My Generation?"

    Yep:

    ROADRUNNER/MY GENERATION BLUES (PONTIAC SILVERDOME)
Shot at The Silver Dome, Pontiac, Michigan, December 6, 1975.
5'10 in film, 9'54 on soundtrack (track 16)
This is from a videotape of the images that were projected on large screens above the stage during the concert. The soundtrack LP includes a live version of "Join Together" which preceded "Roadrunner." It was excised from all the early copies of the CD version released in the U.S. and U.K. but was restored on the 1999 Japanese CD reissue and the 2001 U.K. and U.S. reissue. In the original concert this began with a regular speed version of "My Generation" before going into "Join Together." It ended with some Pete jamming before segueing into "Won't Get Fooled Again." The entire medley up to that point ran 15'22.

Wow, I ordered a copy from cd Japan in late August- and now its oop. Anyway, I think you would enjoy the shm cd. It has a bit more liveliness and sparkle as compared to the original MCA disc. -imo

Yeah, I think that's a "missed it by that much" moment for me. I'll see where I can find it for the cheapest price. So far $38 U.S, which is around $45 Australian.

I have the original CD and the John Astley remaster and let me tell you the original simply stops the redo. I never sought out the SHM because the original disk is so absolutely perfect on its own.

In the version of 'Join Together' discussed here, Pete sings some lines that don't appear in the studio version. Can't make out what he's saying. Anyone know if it's a fragment from another tune?

That is why I like the Who's Next deluxe edition very much, on vinyl I can just drop a slab of live '71 Who (not previously in the collection) on my turntable and not seem like it's such a choppy cut 'n paste collection. In fact I should have a brew and spin that platter tonight. But for all I know that live Young Vic set have been cut, edited, and fixed.

Anyone know if that DE vinyl set was cut from high-rez tapes? It's a potential 24/96 needle drop project for me.

this may be a broader question that's best addressed elsewhere, but my copy of the MCA is a record club edition. Think I can assume it's the same mastering?

It's possible it's been tweaked slightly (i.e., reduced in volume slightly), but the basic mastering should be the same. And it's entirely possible it's completely identical.

I think our host has opined that they are usually bit identical.

It depends. Level shifts are not uncommon.

I came up with something he might be singing (but probably isn't):

    You didn't heed the warnings
    You just sit there, too
This is what's become of rock
    I ain't kiddin' you!

To my knowledge, not only is it not a fragment from another song, but this was the only time on that tour they played that particular bit.
