I'm having a hard time with the definition for some of the above - hard rock?
However there are many above that I would second.

I don't think Bikini Kill was mentioned.

Dunno. My friend saw them live at some festival and really liked them so I checked out their debut CD and agreed.

Do I get to mention every female bass player and drummer in hard rock, too? I mean, there's Jo Bench from Bolt Thrower and Chesire Agusta from Stinking Lizaveta and ... well, you get the idea. Quite a few good ones out there.

Sleater-Kinney, hands down. They rock out with verve and conviction. Janet Weiss is a helluva drummer.

L7 has been mentioned. But I'll use the excuse to post my fav L7 song. The subject is the same as the Bikini Kill song above. I never met that girl in high school.

Edit - had to correctL7 (I didn't spell it right)

Heart started off kind of 'tough' and 'heavy'.....but they faded into light pop/rock fairly quickly...look at their career during the 80's and into the 90's.....light power ballads.....So I give them credit for starting off 'heavy', but they did not sustain it.

What about Babes in Toyland or Bottom (a three piece outfit that was comprised of all women). Then there's Lost Goat, too.
