Does it say anywhere it's the Newark concert? A guess would be it's simply the Wake At Generation footage which Pennebaker filmed. Of course, any new footage from Generation Club would be awesome.
    A shame if it's only the well-known half-interesting 4 minute clip they're referring to.

Cue Experience Hendrix buying it and releasing 25 seconds of it on yet another documentary. I hope I am wrong though.

If it exists just release it already. His original fans are getting fewer and fewer each year and the remaining ones aren't going to be around forever.

Make it happen! The 1969 Royal Albert Hall show seems dead now.

That is also a possibility Dino. We can only hope that it is the mythic Newark performance. The Martin Luther King lament has always been associated with that gig.

Well, the first thing that came out of my mouth when I saw this was "Holy s***!" Oh man! I'm praying that this makes out on an official release. It needs to come out.

How well does Pennebaker know Jimi's music? Is it really a specific piece as a tribute to King or something that we are already familiar with? Does Jimi dedicate it to King in the footage?
    Many questions.

That part from 3.00 - 3.05 (especially a lick Jimi plays at the end) stood right out to me because it was used* as background music in the 1986 video release of Jimi Plays Monterey. Unfortunately it's not on You Tube as far as I can see - to show a comparison - but it's somewhere around the part where 'Papa' John Philips is telling us about Jimi playing in Greenwich Village and then going to London with Chas Chandler; it's between those two bits of speech, anyway. Which I find VERY interesting! :D And that film/video was released 28 years ago. Hmm...

I hope it IS what it's supposed to be and it would be amazing if there was more (or all ) of it and in pristine quality. Hoping for a lot here - and also for it to get a release; but you never know. A year ago, I couldn't have guessed that EH would have re-issued Cry Of Love & Rainbow Bridge and that I finally would own RB on a great sounding CD. :)

*or is it just a little guitar but that Hendrix would throw in now & then? Well, I've only heard this in these two places - to date - and the music that the band are playing on both 'versions' sounds the same to me.

If this is the "clip" I think it is,The tribute came on a concert tour featuring the English band Soft Machine.Robert Wyatt still cites "that" performance as "other wordly".

Yup. We (and people like us) care, but they ain't making any more of us. In 20 years no one is going to be interested in this stuff.

Maybe it's possible to contact Pennebaker in order to determine exactly what he is mentioning - Generation Club or Symphony Hall, Newark? Did he film both?

Did something happen with that? I know it's stuck in legal limbo...

As far as this possible new footage, that would really be something, to say the least.

I sent off an e-mail and got a reply from Frazer Pennebaker who confirms that it is in fact footage from The Generation Club.

I have heard (I know, hearsay) that only about 50 percent of existing tapes/films of core artists such as Velvets, Hendrix, Doors, Janis, et al, currently circulate. There is apparently still much in private collections.

That's not true regarding Hendrix. The well has pretty much run dry as far as studio material and multi-track live recordings are concerned. There is also little good quality soundboard out there to justify an official release. I suspect also that we have had the best of the studio jams.

Maybe most, but there are still interesting recordings to be released!

From Ultimate Hendrix by John McDermott: (re Electric Lady Studios, June 24, 1970)

Hendrix then tore into a stunning medley that lasted – without pause – nearly twenty-six minutes. He began with a slow, blistering, seven-minute rendition of Beginnings, with Mitchell and Cox swinging tightly behind him. This evolved into an up-tempo Hey Baby (Land Of The New Rising Sun), which boasted several thrilling moments. Hendrix then downshifted, cruising into a spirited jam that evolved as Keep On Movin´, a spontaneous hybrid of Straight Ahead and Midnight Lightning. A furious instrumental take of Freedom followed next, carried to a close with a rousing flourish. Kramer´s entusiasm came immediately over the talkback, and applause from guests seated in the control room was audible. Hendrix seemed genuiely surprised by the reaction, and called for the band to come in and listen to what remains today, more than thirty-five years later, a fascinating document of his magnificent talent.

Yes, sounds like fun! It's true that there are a few tantilizing descriptions of studio jams, outtakes in "Ultimate Hendrix". Let's pray that they give us another Dagger album of unheard of recordings.
