Now playing Halloween 1970, from SUNY Stony Brook. Til The Morning Comes, electric Dark Hollow, and a hot Viola Lee Blues are all highlights. The Viola transition into Cumberland is killer, and the only time those two were paired up. This was also the last Viola ever played.
This afternoon went on a walk in local park with my wife and where talking about putting on music there with no electricity and I said generators. First of all it seemed like half the folks on tour got busted that sunny afternoon(Some Guy) walked into that PS and walked out with a dozen folks. Feeling magical he Cosmic Whimped 5 or 6 angry cops with at least 10 stickers each. Walked over that crazy bridge and me and my ex found a spot (it was easy no one was there) and all during the first set we where complaining about the terrible sound. At intermission a bunch of friends walked up to us and we started complaining and they all BUSTED up pointing at two huge generators not 5 feet behind us (DUMB DEADHEADS)!
Werewolves of London Obviously this one gets some attention on Halloween. The last three performances were on Halloween (85, 90 and 91) - but prior to those, it hadn't been played on Halloween. For some reason I thought the 85 one was the first time it was played (maybe because I had the cassette way back in the 80s and had never heard a version before that). But it had been done nine times in Spring of 1978! Here is the first one... http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1978/4/19/werewolves-in-london
Legend holds that Billy got in a snit before the show in '85 (his snits are sometimes of monstrous proportions) and refused to go on-stage if the band did not open with Werewolves. In response to an irascible drummer they worked it up in the dressing room and performed it that night. The versions from 1978 are great fun, the final one of those at Red Rocks 7.8.78 is Epic. Happy Samhain!
Sampled a bit of my Dave's Picks 12 that came in the mail today: about half of the first disc and the Scarlet/Fire on disc 3.
attention Deadheads! Sam Cutler posted this on his FB page and I know many of you have been to a lot of shows thru the years: FOR ALL YOU DEADHEADS OUT THERE !!! YOU could be featured in the upcoming GD documentary! Hey now! As you may have recently heard, the Grateful Dead have partnered with executive producer Martin Scorsese and director Amir Bar-Lev to produce a career-spanning documentary film in advance of their 50th Anniversary in 2015. The producers have been working closely with the Dead, as well as Justin Kreutzmann and David Lemieux, to put together a project we expect you'll be hearing much more about in the coming months. This mornings dose 'o dead was the Capitol Center 3/14/90 from the new Spring '90 box set. A great Loose Lucy on that one!
Today's random show from http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1973/9/24. It's a matrix, but reviews suggest it's dubious quality. I am up to "Sugaree" now, and the sound is a bit muddy but definitely listenable. Or maybe I am just a "Sugaree" fanatic? 09/24/73 Pittsburgh Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA Set 1: Promised Land Sugaree Jack Straw They Love Each Other Mexicali Blues Loose Lucy Looks Like Rain Row Jimmy Big River China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Around And Around Set 2: Ramble On Rose El Paso Mississippi Half-Step Greatest Story Ever Told China Doll Truckin' Nobody's Fault But Mine Eyes Of The World WRS Prelude WRS Part 1 Let It Grow Encore: Sugar Magnolia
Awesome. Looking forward to it. I have an hour's drive to my brother's tonight to watch the Invicta Fights PPV (I know one of the girls fighting on it - coolness). And then an hour back home late tonight. I think I will burn CDs of Barton Hall 5/8/77 (seamons matrix) and bring it with me for me the drive. I have listened to it off and on, but it's about time it got a proper listen. Unless someone has a better suggestion for a soundboard I can grab from etree in the next couple of hours?
