As I am a big fan of Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, I think they need a Standing In The Shadows Of Tinseltown to spotlight the great and underrated work of respected LA session men like Jeff Porcaro, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Kenny Edwards, Russ Kunkel and others.
Look at classic Rondstadt, Zevon, Taylor and Jackson Browne records and you will find all their names.

it looks great, but appears to be a film of lots of performances, rather than a historical documentary.

All band members are interviewed at length on camera.

    You're absolutely right, I know.
    Just wishful thinking.

There's a couple of album based documentaries, The Story of DSOTM & The Story of WYWH.

What bugs me are the ones that were done but almost no one gets a chance to see.

Vashti Bunyan - From Here To Before - 2008 - A couple clips available online, yet no way to see the whole thing.

There was one done on Chris Montez, yet no clips and no word on any release.

And of course the Emitt Rhodes doc, One Man Beatles.

Given that there are many artists who have little or no interest in producing an "authorized" history are there any good unauthorized documentaries?

For some artists, including The Band, Cream and The Grateful Dead, I've had to settle for those little mini-histories included the Classic Albums DVDs.

Below are a few of examples of how it should be done:

BEACH BOYS - Endless Harmony: The Beach Boys Story
    BEE GEES – Official History
BONZO DOG BAND - The Complete Nutter History Of The Bonzos
    HERMAN’S HERMITS - Listen People 1964-1969
HOLLIES - Look Through Any Window 1963-1968
MOTHERS OF INVENTION - In The 1960s
HARRY NILSSON - Who Is Harry Nilsson And Why Is Everybody Talking About Him?
RUSH - Beyond The Lighted Stage
SCOTT WALKER - 30 Century Man

I actually have an "official" copy on DVD (not a DVD-R). I was at a screening attended by Vashti a few years ago and (to my shock and delight), I was given the disc afterwards, on condition that I not circulate it. It's excellent. Some of the footage - including, if I recall correctly, Vashti playing at a school in the Netherlands - is quite extraordinary. I must watch it again soon...

I think Judee Sill definitely warrants a documentary.

  14. FWIW, a Soundgarden doc is in the works from the folks who brought us the Rush Beyond The Lighted Stage film.

There's a good BBC Scotland programme from 1997 about the ISB :
