I'd love to see performances there, that Redman sounds just fantastic. The M.a. Recordings we discussed recently were recorded at St. Peter's in NYC.

Talking about Yusef Lateef, I tried several times but never got into his stuff. I have some of his 1960s work with Cannonball Adderley, but don't really like his tone on saxophone. Maybe someone can educate me :)

Yeah, I noticed that. Thanks for mentioning the label again. I haven't ordered anything yet and I am curious about a few things. This Sonny Rollins lp I'm listening to is very good and the sound is better than I expected. The lp looked like it had never been played. Sonny does wander away from the mic as he is want to do but everyone else sound superb, Flanagan in particular is really strong on this set. He was a good foil for Sonny, imo. Rudy recorded this set so that might explain why it sounds good.

I found this sealed copy today for $15. While I realize it isn't a bargain but a fair price for a thirty year old record still sealed.

I just learned that a friend of mine who plays locally recorded an album with Mike Clark and Delbert Bump, the latter is an organist Steve has played with off and on for over a decade. Steve Homan is truly an exceptional jazz guitarist who can play the full palate of styles in jazz guitar from Freddie Green rhythm style with big band to smoking jazz organ trios and everything in between. He's one of those talented people who chooses not to move to New York to make it. He's found a way to make a living through education Andy p,ays out as time allows. Dr. J may know of Steve depending on how much he has checked out the local scene.

NP Down Home Reunion - Young Men From Memphis (United Artist) mono, black label.
A one off recording, one of those jam session recordings that yields a very satisfying cup of solid jazz.
    Booker Little - t
    Louis Smith - t
    Frank Strozier - as
    George Coleman - ts
    Calvin Newborn - g
    Phineas Newborn - p
    George Jaynor - b
    Charles Crosby - d

How's that for talent? It is not one of those blues based, cliche ridden albums though it looks it with only two songs per side. No, the artists came together and produced a very cogent album when they really didn't have to.

I have tried really hard to like Native Dancer but I just don't. I bought the lp first and sold it. I then bought the cd years later after becoming an even bigger fan of Shorter and I was discovering Brazilian music of all types so I decided to give it another try. :shake: I can't even see exactly why other than I don't like the melodies and it simply doesn't move me. It sounds very commercial to me for lack of a better descriptor. I love both artists but that album somehow doesn't reach me and it is really puzzling to me.

NP Miles at the Plugged Nickel (U.S. Sony box)
All that talk about this music made me want to give it a few spins. This time I decided to start with disc one, something I haven't done sine I bought it. I like the sets later in the evening generally speaking.

The set includes Hodges' 1951-1955 Norgran/Clef recordings.

One of the public-domain labels from Spain, Blue Moon, has issued this stuff on CD. As a PD label they did not have access to the original masters, of course. I have no idea if the CDs are still available. A separate CD was released by Verve in 1991, Used to Be Duke (Verve 849 394-2)
