Definitely my favorite album by Family. Tremendous stuff. Wish I could afford the massive box set. Sigh.

Speaking of Kraftwerk, their song "Metropolis" (from The Man Machine) has an intro that more or less accurately depicts Sound Blaster PC music from the early Nineties..... about 15 years early.

Listen to that intro and tell me you can't imagine hearing it in Wolfenstein 3D. :p

Yeah, I noticed that. This band from the 60's sounds like this modern (throwback) band! UhhhhhMAAAAaaaazing! Shame too, I've heard a few songs from the 60s and 70s that have really surprised me with how modern they sound...I was hoping to come in this thread and be schooled on many more.
Now THAT sounds ahead of it's time by about two decades.

Last night I busted out some King Crimson - Discipline. "Frame By Frame" sounds utterly modern/timeless.

There's a mix of it on YouTube with all guitars and lead vocals removed. Even with the other elements of the song laid bare -- backing vocals and vocal loops, a simple synth organ patch, and the drums -- it sounds like it could have been made last week.

Baron Saturday Pretty Things had a groove that the Stone Roses built a whole career on 20 years later.

Wow! I understand why people like this album so much!

This song was produced by Brian, wasn't it?

When I first heard that song in the 1990's, I thought "wow, this sounds like a current song". I guess it's just the sound of the instrument and the way that Pete attacks the strings, for lack of a better expression.

Yes ... and he is singing on it as well. I have thought about this one a little ... I know that Bruce Johnston once said that the last drop-dead amazing thing Brian did was "Til I Die". He is probably right, but there I would say this comes pretty close.

I think if Pharell or Usher or any of those guys brought this song out today it would be a hit, sounds like a club hit with Nile Rogers fingermarks all over it but was recorded in 70s, I've played it in sets and its gone down well:

I always thought Murmur would've sold better if it were released today than it did when it first came out. That whole album ushered in a whole new style that is imitated and influential today. Sounds very modern.

I remember MBV used this song on tour as part of the mix while they were setting up on their first US reunion tour. It was a perfect choice.

No, this is not a Lenny Kravitz jam from 1994...

...it's an Edwin Birdsong joint from 1973:

Advertise this as the new, upcoming 2015 single by Daft Punk (or Air) and fool millions. Maybe make a video with Pharrell miming the vocoded vocals and have young celebs hanging out to complete the con.

The first time I heard this (first 30 seconds) I was convinced that I accidentally put in some 1990s break-beats in my CD player.

Wow, never heard of that song, or artist. This is great!

I suppose this is quite well known already, but I think it fits this thread nicely:

This clasic always sounded a few years ahead of it's time to me.
