did anyone else pick this up yesterday? mine has terrible surface noise throughout. i looked at the lp under light and it appears that there is something on the surface. i haven't had a chance to clean it yet, but i'm wondering if it's residue from the ink they used on the paper sleeves. they are standard sleeves dyed black.

I'm going to purposefully keep this vague as to not start a witch hunt:

Do you know where this was pressed? I had a new album delivered to me day before yesterday and the surface was weird and hazy. I didn't play it, though. I sent pictures to the label and they told me it must be a one-off & they would send me a replacement, but someone in another forum said his looked similar. If yours came from the same plant, I'll mention it here and perhaps a larger investigation should take place.

Discogs only lists a European-pressed version of "The Best Day" (which may be accurate - The New Pornographers' latest release on Matador was pressed in Europe as well) and it was apparently pressed at MPO in France.

Let's hope not all of the LPs are badly pressed . . . here's a waveform of the 256k MP3:

i cleaned my copy and it didn't make a damn bit of difference, so i took it back. they offered me another copy but i said no thanks, got the new album by the wytches instead and it sounds much better.

I'm sure the cheap innersleeves have something to do with it, but this seems to be the norm when it comes to Matador/4AD/Merge vinyl, because they're pressed at United, who is the worst. I was devastated over the pressing quality of the William Tyler vinyl, because the surface noise is ridiculous, and everyone else had the same problem. I don't think another copy will fare any better, unfortunately. Everything on 180 gram by those labels performs much better, but I wish such high profile labels would stay away from United.

Fret not, we're all hurting! I refer to it as "cake icing." A lot of those new Blue Note reissues have it too, and guess what? They're pressed at United!

good to know . . . the only version listed on Discogs is the EU version.
Do we know for sure that there even was a US-pressed version done at United, or is that merely speculation? I've noticed that Matador, specifically, has been having a lot of the the US releases pressed in Europe lately. I would like a copy of this . . . if some are bad, but some are good, I'll take my chances . . . has anyone else heard the vinyl that can comment on the pressing quality and sound quality?

BTW, is this cut at 45 or 33 RPM -- these are short sides. Taking another look, I'm guessing 33 - side 3 is 18 mins.

So, I picked a copy of this up last night - it is, indeed, pressed at United -- cut by Matt @ Alchemy. My copy was flat and relatively quiet (definitely well within my standards, and I've returned quite a few LPs) -- the sound quality seems ok -- I wasn't blown away . . . compressed, but not too bad, I didn't think. . . I'd like to see the waveforms, maybe I'll make a couple.

I have the Matador Euro pressing and it is quiet and sounds pretty good. Musically it is wonderful.

I can't imagine that a cheap inner sleeve could have any effect on the SQ of the vinyl. 90% of records were always packaged with a plain paper inner sleeve; glossy stock when there were printed inner-sleeves, but no poly-liners, never. That was the purview of Japanese imports only.

It's sad that contemporary pressings in these limited edition small runs aren't up to snuff. It's one of the reasons I rarely buy new vinyl.

Got mine upon release - great pressing, very quiet. No complaints at all.
In fact I wish more new vinyl was this well done.
This means there are great copies out there.
Mine was bought at local store in Chicago.

Yeah, I have to agree with these posts. No issues with my Euro copy which I listened to earlier today. And it's a great record.
