Willie Nile's "Streets of New York".

And Ryan Adams' "New York, New York" as a runner-up.

Having grown up in NYC through the 50s and 60s, my Top 10 for this list would have included Billy Joels 'State of Mind, Sinatra's NYNY, and all four of these Simon & Garfunkel songs:
    The Boxer,
The Only Living Boy in New York,
    The Sounds Of Silence, and
A Heart In New York (Art Garfunkel from the Concert in Central Park).

To me, S&G *are* New York.

The rest of the list, you're all welcome to fight over...

Also "59th Street Bridge Song" - but you can only have so many S&G songs in the list.

I was telling my daughter about the list and complaining about Willie's omission. We decided there could be "50 Best Songs About NYC" list that consisted of nothing but Willie Nile songs.

Sinatra's NEW YORK, NEW YORK ought to be #1.

John Lennon's NEW YORK CITY is overlooked.

Steve Earle's "N.Y.C." from his El Corazon album would've been a worthy addition.

That was my first thought as well. I picked one and kind of went the obvious route. But it is a great song and one of my very favorite discs.

Not terrible but not great. People Who Have Died is a lame choice, and so is Waiting For My Man.

Lists in general are pretty silly. They are an easy way to fill space when your editor is out of ideas. Now days they can also be used to inflate "click through" numbers for ad sales.

There's enough of these, they could program a satellite radio channel, 24/7.
