Down, but only so it won't come crashing down while a record is playing. That could be an unpleasant surprise.

Down always. Tried up and totally removed. Can't hear any difference.

  7. My turntable has a hingeless cover that still can be left on (closed, of course) while playing, but I always remove it for playing. It's only on the turntable when idle.

up or even better removed.. Not sure it makes any difference to be honest, if it does its too subtle for me BUT I go with removed as the best option because on two occasions on both decks (yes Im that stupid) and with both decks in the up position I have removed vinyl and banged it into the front of the upright lid.. Now that I could hear.

  13. If you own a Labrador or Golden Retriever like I, keep the cover down. Happy wagging tails do incredible things to stylus when playing

I don't even own a dust cover. I just keep a swiffer next to the turntable and use as necessary.

How are you able to flip the LP?

I've never heard a difference either way, but right now, I leave it up when listening with my Pro-Ject.

Several years ago, when I lived in a narrow college dorm room, to prevent feedback, we had to put the cover down. I think we were getting sound refletions off the opposing wall that fed back through the stylus. Just my theory, though.

    Same here.

I would guess that any well-designed turntable would have sufficient mechanical isolation, and would be immune to any adverse effects caused by the cover it came with. I do agree with the previous comment about leaving it up during parties. People love to check out what's playing.

I have a non-OEM dust cover made for the VPI TNT. Its big and bulky and I have it resting on the rack for my R2R and its been there since I received it. I've never found a reason to use it as I have an air filter next to the system that works well and if necessary, I dust the TT before each use - often just a quick blow will clear away any dust. The cover is so bulky and heavy, I'd be afraid of trying to negotiate it into place while a record was playing.

The dust cover, on or off, acts like a soundboard, capturing and transferring any airborne vibrations to your turntable like a sail in the wind. Not what one wants to do. Leave it off when playing music through your speakers.
