Contact Lost & The Well Dressed Guitar - Deep Purple

Here's a clip from China in 2004. Contact Lost was the closing track on Bananas [2003] and was dedicated to their friends who were on board the Space shuttle Columbia, which disintegrated during re-entry in 2003. The Well Dressed Guitar [at about 1:50] was an outake from Bananas that ended up on the tour edition of Rapture of the Deep.

I'd have to rate the Who's Dogs Part Two as a great instrumental, full of power and slam. It's more concise than Sparks, which is no slouch, either.
Zappa' Chunga's Revenge is the most rocking of his intrumentals that I like. For my money Hot Rats is more jazz.
I have 5 cassettes full of instrumental stuff, so I have to quit now before I get too hung up on this.

That reminded me of "Duane's Tune" by The Dickey Bett's Band (last track on the last disc in the ABB's "Dreams" box).

In post #27 Rachael Bee mentioned "Funk Butt" by Rhinoceros. "Apricot Brandy" has been a favorite since the first time I heard it way back in high school.

Don't know if it counts, but how about King Curtis' cover of "Whole Lotta Love"?

Someone early in the thread mentioned Memphis by Lonnie Mack, but how about Lonnie's second hit, Wham? A great instrumental, it probably rocks harder than Memphis!

I'm guessing that didn't come out right. Two different records. Both great, and Duane Eddy's may
be one of the top 5 greatest instrumentals ever recorded. Also, the piano player on Mancini's iconic
version, playing those famous opening notes, is none other than "Johnny" Williams, who of course
is now composer and conductor John Williams (think "Star Wars", etc, etc).

Yeah, a bit misleading. I was citing the composer of it and then Eddy's recording. Didn't know that was John Williams on piano.

Here's the back scan of Mancini's 1960 LP "Combo" which had basically the same personnel as the
"Peter Gunn" LP from 1959. John "Johnny" Williams is at the lower right. Looked a lot different then....
Interestingly, on this LP Williams played harpsichord on every track, which may have
been the first straight jazz album to use harpsichord as the lead instrument. Leave
it to Mancini. One of his best albums.
