Something just like that Luke, thanks.

Why the 1973 date in paranthesis? Referring to Odds and Sods?

Yes, 1968-72 included so many Who tracks, that were left without a 'proper' album, and at or around the time of their creation. I think it would be helpful to have easy reference to them here too, and with some more detail, such as mix variations. I was thinking about starting another thread similar to this one, for the years '69-73. We know a little more about Quadrophenia now too, due to the recent release of more demos and papers.

Yes. I don't know if they were mixed at the time or especially for Odds & Sods in 1973.

  5. This thread rocks! The information in here is so useful for collecting early Who stuff. The various alternate versions and stereo/mono variants can give you a headache!

Thanks so much to everybody who contributed!

Yes! Does anybody know what changed with the recent Japanese SHM releases? Are these superior to the older discs?

I've been thinking there must be many changes since the thread started and more and more Who stuff has been released since? Perhaps the AQO and MG compilations from Japan and the Odds and Sods and The Missing collections remasters from Japan would add to the list. I don't have it in me to look back through the thread to check nor the recall nor knowledge right now to offer anything more specific. Perhaps someone else can/will. Also, there is Scott Parker's new book which I am looking forward to reading. Tommy seems to simplify the discography some, and then things get kind of all over the place again from '70-73 despite no longer accounting for both mono and stereo mixes.

There are a lot of non album tracks, 1964-68. I found the best way to get most of those tracks was to purchase 30 years of R&B and the expanded ODDS and Sods and
the expanded WHO sell Out and expanded A Quck One reissues, those four albums gave me some studio version, of nearly every non album track

How about "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" no backing vocals version (from My Genration sacd & "Shel Talmy Sessions" test pressing) and "Instant Party Mixture" vocals only from the Shel Talmy Sessions?

That's a bit of a loaded question. Without going into a *ton* of detail, generally (regarding the discs from 12/2011):

    - The original mixes were used for the album tracks (rather than the remixes on many of the '90s CDs).
    - In a number of cases, vintage (unreleased) mixes were used for bonus tracks where '90s mixes were previously used.

There's another thread that details much of this.

One exception to the above is I *think* I'm The Face on O&S is a different mix compared to what was originally released.. It certainly seems to be different to the original CD, although it is much closer to that mix than the '90s remix. I haven't yet been able to sample any vinyl copies, however.

I'd argue the overall sound is quite good, but there are also a fair number of glitches and mistakes, so it is hard to make a blanket statement.

    Great work:eek:

Maybe this list is useful for a comparison, even if your list is 'much more' accurate and up to date!!

Only gave the above link a glance, but the information looks very helpful.

Is there a mono mix on cd of Here 'Tis?

GREAT thread! How did I miss this one in all of my Who forum searches?

Another thread for Tommy and beyond would be excellent.

That list shows no mono mix for Here 'Tis. It doesn't 'detail' the mono mix of I'm the Face as being on the Quadrophenia soundtrack although it does identify a mono mix. No 'Here 'Tis' mono mix has survived apparently? What was on the acetate was stereo only? Luke, or any Who experts, any information on Here 'Tis?

With new releases of original mixes and remixes the thread hasn't really kept up with them. Fortunately, Who fans are the ongoing beneficiaries of these new releases!

I realized that in all the tracking of variant mixes and remixes I've done, I've never actually put together a list of the variant mixes that were released at the time, so using Andreas' template, this is what I've come up with. I've listed variant mixes after the song's first release, even if it came out some time later in the 60s (e.g. US mix of Someone's Coming).

    The Who 1964-1969

I'm the Face (UK single, February 3, 1964) mono
Zoot Suit (B-side of I'm The Face) mono

    I Can't Explain (UK single, January 15, 1965) mono
Bald Headed Woman (B-side of I Can't Explain) mono

Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere (UK single, May 21, 1965) mono
Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere (alternate) (French EP) mono
Daddy Rolling Stone (B-side of Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere) mono
Anytime You Want Me (US B-side of Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere) mono

Shout And Shimmy (B-side of UK single My Generation, November 5, 1965) mono

Album: My Generation (December 25, 1965) mono
The Kids Are Alright (single edit) (US single, July 1966) mono

Substitute (UK single, March 4, 1966) mono
Substitute (censored US version) (US single) mono
[Waltz for a Pig (B-side of Substitute, not actually by the Who) mono]

Circles (B-side of A Legal Matter, March 7, 1966)) mono

    I'm a Boy (UK single, August 26, 1966) mono
I'm a Boy (US mix) (US single) mono
I'm a Boy (German LP?) stereo
In the City (B-side of I'm A Boy) mono
In the City (German LP?) stereo

Disguises (Ready Steady Who! EP, November 11,1966) mono
    Diguises (German LP?) stereo
Circles (revised version) (Ready Steady Who! EP, November 11,1966) mono
Batman (Ready Steady Who! EP, November 11,1966) mono
Bucket T (Ready Steady Who! EP, November 11,1966) mono
Barbara Ann (Ready Steady Who! EP, November 11,1966) mono

Happy Jack (UK single, December 3, 1966) mono
Happy Jack (alternate mix) (Direct Hits, October 1968)
I've Been Away (B-side of Happy Jack) mono

Album: A Quick One (December 9, 1966) mono

Magic Bus (Magic Bus LP, 1968) stereo

Dogs, Part 2 (B-side of Pinball Wizard, March, 1969) stereo

Album: Tommy (May 23, 1969) stereo

Young Man Blues (The House That Track Built compilation, 1969) stereo

Is that every variant that was actually released by the band during the 1960s?

    Nope.

You're missing the Talmy version of Circles and have the remake listed twice.

    US mono I'm A Boy.
Stereo AQO tracks (Germany and US, title track on THTTB).
Stereo I'm A Boy, In The City, and Disguises (Germany).
Alt Happy Jack (I believe on Direct Hits).
    Stereo Magic Bus (US).

Truly great list. Andreas has been a go-to guy for this info for a long time.

Thanks Luke, I've incorporated those additions. The Talmy 'Circles' was the b-side of 'A Legal Matter', correct? And I wasn't aware that that alternate Happy Jack had turned up this early. Which German album (I'm assuming it was an album) did those stereo mixes appear on? Discogs seems to be worse than useless in helping sort that out. And do you know which AQO tracks appeared in stereo in the US / Germany?

Another question: Where can you find / how do you tell the difference with the US mix of 'I'm a Boy'?
