If you had to choose best 50 "hard" sci-fi or dystopia films what would they be? Please don't include cosmic-book and fantasy staff. I am taking "2000 Space Odyssey" stuff here.

Rama could be a great 2001-style film, but in no way would it be commercial enough to draw the kind of budget it would require to do right.

I'm curious to see what SyFy does with Childhood's End

Rama, if done with big budget, can be spectacular. I am just afraid they will F it up.

Trying to come up with some that haven't been mentioned:

Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury has "Author of Fahrenheit 451" on his grave marker.
    Z. P. G.
Ikarie XB-1 - Kubrick saw this and Quatermass and the Pit and came up with 2001 :)
Planet of the Vampires - the Italian title Terrore nello spazio (Terror in Space) is more accurate since there aren't really any vampires. Ridley Scott saw this and It! The Terror from Beyond Space and came up with Alien :)
Creation of the Humanoids - the old saw is that this was Andy Warhol's favorite film.
    Kronos (1957)
Five - probably the first post-nuclear-war film
Idaho Transfer - made for nothing and not great but intriguing. Someone please restore this and release on BRD. Thank you.
The Lathe of Heaven (made for TV). I'm still hoping that someone squirreled away a copy ofsome original film elements somewhere; the DVD was made from videotape and doesn't look very good. Problems with rights to the Beatles' We Can Work It out led to the negative and prints being destroyed because the producers feared that it would be broadcast again and subject to a lawsuit.
A Boy and His Dog - Dystopia? You got it.
Who? - fascinating, subtle film, Elliot Gould is excellent.
The 10th Victim - is this the first film to predict reality TV? Mike Meyers certainly liked it.
The Final Programme - wonderfully bizarre
    The Mysterians
Death Watch - another early reality TV predictor

If we're talking "hard sf," I'll have to leave out favorites like George Pal's Time Machine or even Guardians of the Galaxy, but I think I can provide the following personal top 12:

    Blade Runner
    The Terminator
The Thing From Another World (1952 version)
    Gattaca
    Robocop (Verhoeven version)
    Total Recall (ditto)
    E.T.
    Silent Running
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Wall-E (HOW AM I THE FIRST PERSON TO MENTION THIS??!!)
    Solaris (Soviet version)
Death Race 2000 (Corman version: Again, HOW AM I THE FIRST PERSON TO MENTION THIS??!! Does no-one have a sense of humor?)

Honorable mentions: Spielberg's AI & Minority Report. Both extraordinary films, but they wear their influences a little too much on their sleeve...in any case, amazing that he made them one after another, just a year apart, on time and under budget! The AI->Minority Report->Catch Me If You Can three-year period is the kind of run that directors dream of having.

Never been a fan of 2001 or Kubrick, to be honest.

  22. I would add Guardians of the Galaxy but I thought of that as more of a comic book movie with science fiction/space opera elements in it.

  23. Interesting as A.I. has strong Kubrick elements to it. As you know it was originally developed by Kubrick but he gave it up when he realized it would fit Spielberg's style better.

A Clockwork Orange was listed a few times here. I have seen it twice, but not recently and enjoyed it a lot,
But, where is the science in the fiction movie A Clockwork Orange?

  25. Solaris

    Solaris a bullet in flight

I'm convinced Kubrick would have made a very hard R-rated film (perhaps even NC-17) that would have been much more effectively sterile in tone and disturbing in character. Spielberg's sentimentality is both his worst and arguably most popular trait, and it does not serve AI well at all.

Back on topic, my favorites in chronological order:

Metropolis (the complete version, with original score)
    Them!
    Invasion of the Body Snatchers
    20.000 Leagues Under the Sea
    Forbidden Planet
Journey to the Center of the Earth
    Quatermass and the Pit
    2001
    Planet of the Apes (1968)
    THX 1138
    Solaris
    Fantastic Planet
    Star Wars
    Superman
    Alien
    The Empire Strikes Back
    Blade Runner
    The Thing
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    Buckaroo Banzai
    Back to the Future
    Brazil
    The Matrix
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I'm sure there are quite a few I've left out, and quite a few others deserve mention even though they aren't my absolute favorites. I'll watch almost anything science fiction because it may have a compelling idea at its core, which is why I love the genre in the first place. To that end, The Navigator, Explorers, Quiet Earth, Soylent Green, Liquid Sky, The Man Who Fell To Earth, A Clockwork Orange, etc etc.
