Based on the 'Songs from the Wood' and 'Heavy Horses' era Jethro Tull discussion, what are some other albums that have this same sound/vibe/theme.

I think of "pastoral" as being a bit more mellow and expansive than those two Tull albums tend to be, so with that caveat, my favorite albums that I would describe as "pastoral" include:

    Celeste--Principe di un Giorno
Harmonium--Si On Avait Besoin d'un Cinquième Saison
    PFM--Per Un Amico/Photos of Ghosts
    White Willow--Ignis Fatuus
    Genesis--Trespass

Of these, the White Willow comes closest to the medievalism of those Tull albums. Actually, you might also enjoy Gryphon and the Strawbs (for the latter, perhaps start with either Grave New World or From the Witchwood--these are probably closer to those Tull albums than the other choices I mentioned above).

I guess the second and third Midlake albums (especially the third) could qualify.

I've never heard the term "pastoral" used to describe a musical style...

I think of pastoral as the 12 string bits in Genesis or Anthony Phillips. Very English. Also the Celeste album mentioned above. Not those Tull albums. The closest thing to those Tull albums is Fairport Convention and their various offshoots and The Strawbs.

Maybe the mother of all pastoral albums is Van Morrison Vleeden Fleece. Followed closely by Hard Nose To The Highway.

Probably one of my favorite categories.

I admit I've never heard those Tull albums, but I do love these, all of which fit my personal definition of pastoral (don't ask me to define it, but I know it when I hear it)

    Arnold - Hillside
Spectre Folk - The Ancient Storm
    Pure X - Angel
    Sun River - S/T
Arborea - Fortress Of The Sun
    Espers - III
    Kim Jung Mi - Now
Jakob Olausson - Morning And Sunrise

When I hear the word "pastoral" in regards to music I just think of Virginia Astley and her albums like "From Gardens Where We Feel Secure" - wonderful music when that particular mood strikes me.

I was just about to mention The Pentangle, a very underrated band. :righton:
