'Vertigo' or 'Rear Window'?

So, I spent a hungover Sunday watching 'Rear Window' on Blu-ray. Excellent transfer, by the way. Now, we all know that Hitchcock's films have been subject to an enormous amount of posthumous re-evaluation, with 'Vertigo' having now replaced 'Citizen Kane' at the pinnacle of the infamous BFI Critics' poll:

    http://www.bfi.org.uk/news/50-greatest-films-all-time

I've pondered this a lot over the last few years: is 'Vertigo' the best film of all time? Is it the best Hitchcock film? Is it even the best Jimmy Stewart Hitchcock film?

Well, simple vote: which do you rate more highly, 'Vertigo' or 'Rear Window'? And why?

"Window". I think it's a tighter, more interesting story. I like "Vertigo" but don't view it as the grand masterpiece it seems to be seen as now...

Both are great films, but "Rear Window" gets my vote.

Rear Window for me also. Vertigo's overrated IMO

Rear Window - multiple great characters, perfect point of view, just enough humorous relief and an average fool becoming a truly foreboding bad guy.

Saw both films on the big screen within the last decade. With "Rear Window" I was on the edge of my seat.

Rear Window for me. The set will never stop being hypnotic in and of itself, and the performances are all brilliantly memorable. As a commentary on voyeurism, which continues to be a great part of our culture, it can't be beat. Vertigo is dark, twisted and beautifully made (that score!), but Rear Window is just so deeply engrossing.

You can look at it on so many levels. It's not light entertainment, unless you want it to be.
Plus Stewart is almost a bad guy, a rarity in his film history.

They are both brilliant and both deserve mention in the top ten films of all time.

Vertigo by a hair. It's added edge of complexity gives it the win.

I'll go with Rear Window. High Anxiety ruined Vertigo for me.

Rear Window. It's a close call, but Grace Kelly is so stunningly beautiful in RW

Anytime it is on, I ALWAYS watch it. I can't say the same for Vertigo. It just doesn't have the same appeal.

Man, I really love both. This is a "Beatles vs. Stones" argument.

Both are excellent. I suppose most days I'd choose Rear Window but it's pretty damn close between the two.

In that case, the choice should be incredibly easy. :)

I like Vertigo a tad more, though I don't feel it's the best film of all time and was disappointed it topped Citizen Kane.

REAR WINDOW. I'm a fan of old-time films, who appreciates the classics ... but yet I found VERTIGO to be as dull as dishwater the first time I struggled through it. But I guess we all have our own personal AFI Top Films that we don't care for.

I also love both, but Rear Window wins thanks to Thelma Ritter.

Rear Window by a country mile. It's got it all - great premise, great visuals, great actors, great drama, great humor, great music, and of course...Miss Torso.
