They could call this movie Awful Sequel and it wouldn't affect ticket sales one bit!

You know the practical makeup budget is gonna be huge, not for the aliens, but to hide the wrinkles on Hammel, Ford, and Fisher. :p

You know... I have two thoughts that I take away from this announcement today about The Force Awakens:

    1. No "Episode" number. Definitely harkening back to the Original Trilogy.
    2. The Force not The Midiclorians or some such crap. The Force.

The filmmakers and marketing experts are definitely trying to send a signal that this will be the Star Wars you love. Not the Star Wars that nearly made you hate Star Wars.

It's like Abrams said, this is supposed to be more along the lines of the Original Trilogy. It seems like everyone except for Lucas realizes that the prequels weren't very good.

They could have even called it:

Art imitates life? Sounds like the story of Mark Hamill.:hide:

I thought there is an episode number. Episode VII: The Force Awakens surely? I can't imagine the opening crawl not having an episode number.

I'm guessing the comment was based on the episode number not being in that new logo for the new film. I think the prequels all had the episode number as part of the logo in most if not all cases.

It may well be that the actual *title* of this film doesn't have "Episode VII" in it, but I would have to guess the episode number will be in the opening crawl.

It's tough to say. As "Edge of Tomorrow" has recently shown, studios are not afraid to be ambiguous about what is technically the "title" of a movie versus what is a tagline that can accompany or not accompany the title.

I would guess most movie theaters will not have "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" up on the marquee (other than perhaps premiers and major markets). I think some local theaters usually just had "Star Wars" up there for the prequels.

It didn't make me hate Star Wars. It made me hate the prequels.

I can't wait for the posters. Is "You Fell In Love With The Originals Only To Have Them Ruined Later, Then You Had Your Enthusiasm Crushed With The Prequels And Now The Director Of Two Terrible Star Trek Films Is Continuing The Saga" too much to fit?

How is this a good marketing strategy in the online age?? That's a pretty small handful of theaters. They're basically just encouraging piracy of the trailer.

As long as the revenue of people lining up at theaters outweighs the lost (?) revenue of pissed off people, then it makes perfect sense.

Of course there will be a pirated trailer. A few days later, we'll get the real one online.

Same thing happened with Episode I. Initially it was just shown as a preview with certain movies before eventually making its way to other outlets.

That was 1998. This is 2014.

In 1998 it took me like an hour or more to download the trailer in decent quality, so yeah it made sense to show it chiefly in theaters. Doesn't make sense today.

Hype. Show it only a few select theaters. Make those who don't get a chance to see it right away crave for it.

Doesn't matter the year. They're still promoting an experience of going to a movie, which is essentially unchanged for the past 100 years.

And if they can do it by selling more tix to associated movies, more power to 'em.
