NO WAY - I like it! But hated it when it was new as a kid.
    It's very blues-ey.

I like Lay Down (mostly for The Edwin Hawkins Singers), and she WAS adorable, but she could be the most irritating performer ever.

Yes! Brand New Key might be a bit quirky but I'd play that over the poop they shovel to the masses today.

Thanks Ralph, I hadn't seen that before!
I don't know why, but it occurred to me while listening to Lay Down (Candles In The Rain) that Stevie Nicks could cover that tune well. Not comparing the two of them or anything, it just occurred to me.

Always liked the hits, Brand New Key, The Nickel Song, Lay Down, What Have They Done To My Song Ma. I used to have the old live album, with the dreaded Psychotherapy. :) As I recall she got some FM airplay a little later with Cyclone.
    Here's The Nickel Song:

I only discovered her quite recently. Brand New Key is amazing.
I picked up an 80's CD compilation which is hit and miss. For example Animal Crackers is of its time, & crap. But there are more than a few absolute gems on that CD.
Highlights are lay Down, Ruby Tuesday, What have they Done to My song ma?, Peace Will Come , Baby Day, Save The Night & Brand New Key.
I can see how her quirky manner could begin to grate after a while.
I prefer her version of Ruby Tuesday to The Stones version.
She is of her time.... but great.

Totally agree with both statements. I was only 4 when the song came out but I've loved it since first hearing it. Also love "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" and "What Have They Done To My Song Ma" (although I have to admit I like the cover from The New Seekers better). I always wondered why she called it "What Have They Done"....when the lyrics are "Look What They've Done". It kind of reminds me of how Jerry Butler had a hit with "He Will Break Your Heart" when Tony Orlando & Dawn's version of "He Don't Love You (Like I love You)" is the correct lyric.

Huge fan of hers. Posting a clip of one of my favorite songs of hers, performed solo and much better than the Studio version. Simply stunning....

Why not compare them? Melanie is the forerunner of Stevie Nicks quavery vibrato!

That Flower Child image also hurt her later on. She deserves a better legacy than she currently has. She is a talented writer and singer. Although I admit I haven't listened to her in years.

I never really liked Lay Down, the first thing I heard by her, but Peace Will Come was a whole different matter. I bought Leftover Wine to have it. Psychotherapy is still funny, although it's an obvious novelty and most people don't need to hear novelties too often (except for the Martian Hop, in my case!).

And I liked Lover's Cross when I heard it enough to pick up Madrugada.

Hey Vinyl Man Another bloody Yank down under...

I only really know "Lay Down" (which I love) and "Brand New Key" (which is, well, cute and okay for an occasional listen). I ought to explore her catalog a bit more.
