A couple more thoughts on Rather Ripped.

I rarely run across anybody that features Sleepin' Around as a fave but I LOVE it! It's one of my standout tracks on that album. It's got the groove and grinds away far better than The Neutral or Lights Out.

Also, Helen Lundeberg should've been on it. It would've broken up the flow of that album greatly and made it more lovingly them. :)

I must confess that I'm a little biased however. Before Rather Ripped was recorded, I saw Kim, Thurston and Steve as a threesome play Pink Steam, Sleepin' Around, Helen Lundeberg, Do You Believe In Rapture and Or LIVE so I was expecting all of those songs to be on the album. I felt sorta cheated until I bought the Japan disc.

Or is another song where I love the music and the words felt real blah to me.

Revisited The Eternal, and was reminded how absolutely killer the track Poison Arrow is! Nevermind that it could have dropped into Daydream Nation and no one would have thought it was made 20 years later...it absolutely rocks, and Thurston delivers it with his unimitably coolest drawl..."your six string guitar is a mess, silver bullets hanging off your dress". Did I read somewhere that the lyrics were supposed to be about Johnny Thunders?

  9. As of right now here's my ranking, with the stipulation that only the top 2 are more or less permanent and the rest of them can shift around...although the last two can only exchange places, they're both permanently at the bottom!

    Bad Moon Rising
    Sister
    Goo
    Evol
    Dirty
    Sonic Nurse
    A Thousand Leaves
    Kill Yr Idols

    Favorites/Good/Least (no order):

    Sister
    EVOL
    Goo
    Dirty
    The Eternal
    Bad Moon Rising
    Sonic Nurse
    The Destroyed Room

Daydream Nation (I remember not connecting as much with this. The songs are some of their best but for some reason I liked others better)
    Confusion Is Sex
    Sonic Youth
    Kill Yr Idols
    Washing Machine
    A Thousand Leaves
    Murray St
    Rather Ripped

Experimental Jet Set (I've gotten used to this one and like it a lot more but it's still a tough listen against other albums)
NYC Ghosts & Flowers (the only one I don't like all the way through)

My favorite era is the first 10 years. After a couple of major bumps they became more consistent for me. Lots of people seem to feel otherwise but for me the ended on a high note. The Eternal reminds me of the energy of the first 10 years.

I've been listening to Murray St, Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped on vinyl all week (all arrived at once) and loving them.

Perfect band for a perfect (!) format. ;)

    Yes, especially Sonic Nurse.
The pressing is DEAD silent (hard to know it's even on) and there are plenty of layers over the digital versions I've been trying.

Oh God... I need a second life where I can just and only listen to albums.... I've wanted to play this badly recently but Temples, Led Zeppelin and T.Rex got in the way:( And then there was "Long Drive" by Modest Mouse. I KEEP trying!! Saying that I haven't played my Build To Spill albums in ages too....

I just started to listen to Murray Street and i think is the best Sonic Youth album, or at least my favorite.Which other album of theirs should i get if i'm looking for the same sonority? I already have Sonic Nurse, Washing Machine, Goo, Sister and Daydream Nation.

    Cheers.

It's a tough call. NYC Ghost & Flowers is one album back in time from Murray... and it has a real poetry feel. Before that, A Thousand Leaves is more rock like Nurse. I say start with A Thousand... then go to NYC... to bridge the gap.

I'd recommend EVOL - I'd call that one the first in the line of albums that have a more melodic thread of the albums you list above.

I want something like Murray Street, with long and noisy instrumental jams. Although i have albums like Sister and Goo, i don't enjoy them that much. I like songs like "The Diamond Sea".

If the languorous poetry and droning jams are up your alley, then NYC Ghosts and Flowers--but there is nothing resembling pop on that. Similar comments on Bad Moon Rising.
In overall feel I'd put A Thousand Leaves closest to Murray St., but it doesn't flow the same way. But it has long meandering melodic jams and overall sonority is similar.

I'd say try Rather Ripped. I've been checking that one out more lately and I enjoy it nearly as much as the two that precede it. There's a warm, melodic quality about their sound here that's quite refreshing from them. Even when the songwriting occasionally underwhelms, it's an enjoyable listen.

And one of the all time best tracks ever "Pink Steam" is on it too! :agree:
