I'm a fan of The Velvet Underground and have been since my late-teens, but I fully understand where you're coming from. The first two albums are far from ear-pleasing, but that's what attracts me. Isn't taste a funny thing?

Yes I am! Deadwing is one of those albums you can wake me up for in the middle of the night. It's got Michael Ackerfeldt (did I spell that right) guesting on 1 or 2 songs, so I'd recommend you give that one a listen.

Other good ones to start with are In Absenstia, and Stupid Dream. The latter is more mellow.

Zappa- I recognize that he was a talented musician and I even like 'Shut Up and Play Your Guitar', but I bought about 9/10 discs of his and they did nothing for me. The humor didn't connect with me and that's all over his music.
Yes- I like prog but the vocals just grate so much to me that I can't listen to them. Similarly, Rush
The Monkees- not my cup of tea, and I'm not starting a war by listing what I don't like about them

I'm actually a Porcupine Tree fan, I just worded that badly (I've been meaning to take a listen to Opeth, but have a horrible feeling I won't like them!)
"Stupid Dream" is one of my favourite albums and I recently heard "Fear of a Blank Planet" for the first time and loved it (seven years late on that one!) Didn't realise Michael Ackerfeldt guests on "Deadwing"...

This I fully understand, I do have some prog leanings but desperately struggle with Yes (too 'good' for their own good?)
Rush I can't comment too much on, "The Spirit of Radio" is a great song and their musicianship is outstanding, but I don't feel compelled to listen to much more...

It depends which album you start with. A big chunk of his catalog is extremely experimental and most people can't take it. Please, listen to "Hot Rats". Great album and easily digestible.

    P.S.: I still can't get around avant-garde Zappa though.

I got a hold of "Freak Out!" and "Absolutely Free", I either haven't listened intently or they just haven't grabbed me...

I was just listening to "Safe as Milk", once again trying to see why despite it's five star reviews it just doesn't click with me...

    OK, some more confessions:
U2 - I like some tracks, maybe one album. They become a blur to me when I play them.
Grateful Dead - Pleasant music, talented band, nice sonics, I own some albums. Only play them in small doses, usually just one side, then I'm done for awhile.
Ramones - After 2-3 tracks, all the songs sound the same to me.
Sex Pistols - Just don't get it.
Joni Mitchell - Nice, comforting music, after one side I'm done. guess I'm not sensitive enough.....

I saw the Stones listed - one of my top tier bands. I would never try to convert those that don't get them.....here's hoping this thread does NOT turn out that way. I am sure most of us have already tried and tested the bands we list many times over.:righton:

Spot on, no need for conversions here, most of the musicians I've listed I've listened to more than enough to know there just isn't a 'click' :yikes: ;)

Bob Marley and James Brown. Christina Aguilera of the (relatively) modern singers. Though it would appear her career is in a similar state to Marley and Brown!

I keep trying to get into Zappa as I feel I should like him based on my musical tastes. For example I like Beefheart. Other than a few tracks it hasn't clicked for me.
