Fine, but I'd say most of the acts you've listed - with the notable exception of Zappa - aren't "bands that most critics and fans laud" such that criticism "flies in the face of most 'serious' music-lovers, especially those on this forum?" (As per the criteria set forth in the OP).

The Pixies. God, I loathe the [expletive deleted] Pixies. And I don't feel guilty about it at all.

There are certain bands I don't want to list, because While I hate MOST of their recorded output, they did put out one or two good records before they hit it big.

    "Maybe"??? ;)

I'm also not a jazz guy. Tried hard, and kinda liked it back in college. I took an appreciation course, and that helped... but whatever affection I mustered was short-lived. I could respect jazz but not really ENJOY it...

Lotsa people just picking popular bands they don't like. That was inevitable, methinks - that's how these threads go...

I think most people have gone along the right lines...
Admitting you don't click with The Beach Boys on this forum is a brave gesture around these parts! :kilroy:

Cream, apart from "Sunshine of Your Love" I never clicked. Same for The Doors save for less than a handful of songs...

T Rex. Its the lyrics, they seem to be either a satire on pop or written by an idiot....

I struggle with U2, though they seem to be committed to what they do...and the Beach Boys...the singles yes, the albums, dear god, no.....when I finally heard Smile I had to go for a walk, clear my head....

There's very little rock that I flat out don't like, especially popular bands.
But, there are a few bands that have never clicked with me.
    The Foo Fighters
The Byrds (like a few songs but not enough to buy them. Had their greatest hits album for a while.)
The Animals (have a greatest hits on vinyl but seldom listen to it, not sure why I don't dig these guys that much)
The Kinks (have had a few of their greatest hits comps on CD, cassette and vinyl, but they never made a huge impression on me like, say, the Who.)
Bruce Springsteen (went through a stage of liking him around 1984, but it passed)
    Van Morrison
Nirvana (I respect them but I much prefer other 90s grunge bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam)
Neil Young and Joe Walsh (both of these guys have done a lot, and I like certain songs that get played on the radio but I would not buy any of it.)
    U2

Good thing I don't like every rock band. I have too many albums as it us!

The Beach Boys - can't stand the sound. Simpering.

    The Doors - whimpering vocals.

U2 - frankly i wouldn't even know where to start

Sting - we haven't got space so i won't even try.

    love everyone else though.....

    Yes!!! THIS!

I've been struggling to say something coherent on this thread... but you've given me the words! I agree on the two artistes named (I love T Rex though!). But I can also do this:

"I struggle with XXXXX, though they seem to be committed to what they do...and YYYYYY...the singles yes, the albums, dear god, no.....when I finally heard ZZZZZZ I had to go for a walk, clear my head...."

This seems to apply to several well-respected artistes for me:
    Bruce Springsteen
    Guns and Roses
    Neil Young
    Elton John
John Lennon & George Harrison (as solo bods, that is, I love The Beatles)
    The Smiths
    ... others...

And talking of albums, and The Beatles, the one that's meant to be "the thing", the one that the world goes on about ... I just don't get it. I love virtually ALL the songs on the album, but Sgt Pepper as a piece of work just doesn't do it for me - I can't get through it. I guess you had to be there when it came out (actually I was, but only four years old and not that interested... in fact, for many years I thought The Beatles were the manufactured copy and the Monkees were the real band!)

I quite like Porcupine Tree, but I really haven't liked any of the Opeth I've heard. At all. And that includes Storm Corrosion. Yet, I really like Deadwing - go figure!

As I respect Foo Fighters and like them very much, I thank you for calling me a chump.
(and IMO anyone who doesn't like The Beatles, The Doors or Cream is a chump)

A small part of the reason I made this post was to show just how overly personal some people take other's music tastes. As I said in the opening statement, music taste is subjective, there's plenty of posts here stating bands that I love, but just accept others have different tastes, it's pretty easy!
