So sad I use to watch Chespirito and Chapaulin Colorado with my grandparents when I was a little boy... RIP

To non-Latinos, he's probably best known as the inspiration for The Simpsons character Bumblebee Man.

On the other hand, to the many of us who grew up watching Spanish-language TV in the 70s and 80s, he was a household name. His comedy formula was simple, but cleverly scripted and brilliantly executed. I also found it charming that all of the characters that he played had names that started with "Ch" -- like his real-life nickname, Chespirito.

He leaves behind a huge legacy -- including, but not limited to, several catchphrases that are still making the rounds in Latin America after 40+ years. Chanfle!

 

I read that when he opened his Twitter account, his first tweet was "siganme los buenos". Very clever; couldn't help but smile.
