It was intended as a joke, saying obscure "one hit wonders" like David Geddes and Lobo are in the Hall - it's a little hard to recognize as humor.

I say yes, absolutely. However, only as long as it takes for the company to finish whatever it may be that they're building in there.

Just saying...Carpenters are no less deserving than ABBA or Madonna....if those 2 are in there...why not Karen and Richard also?

Yes...they set a precedent. How can Madonna and or ABBA be in...and not Karen and Richard? They had just as much notoriety and hits etc...

They should not be in due to them not making any Rock And Roll records of any kind...whatsoever.
They produced "Supermarket music" at best in my honest opinion.

No, they didn't. ABBA and Madonna achieved much greater success than the Carpenters ever did. Carpenters had a good chart run in the first half of the Seventies but declined steeply after that...

I don't remember Abba having as much success in the US as the Carpenters did, can you back that up ?

Well 11 top 5 singles in the US compared to 2 for Abba would be my measuring stick. Abba having much greater success, obviously not.

I said "No". I think the answer is in the title, the part where it says "Rock and Roll".

There may be other artists who shouldn't be in there already, but that's no reason to go all silly. :D

Where did I specify "success in the US" for ABBA?

Well you did say that Abba achieved much greater success than the Carpenters and unless you're weighing the UK higher than the US, that's clearly untrue.

Where did I say I weigh UK higher than US? Where did I specify any single territory?

    Worldwide record sales:

ABBA: 200 million records (U.S. sales: 57.8 million)
The Carpenters: 100 million records (U.S. sales: 45.9 million)

Nowhere and I didn't say you did, but you put Abba way above the Carpenters in success and that just isn't so.

Well then we agree to disagree.....in my humble opinion, if you have ABBA in there...and Madonna for that matter...then Carpenters deserve a look. And if you want to go a step further..I firmly believe that Cheap Trick, The Monkees and The Moody Blues should've been in there before all of them !! Now put that in your pipe and smoke it.....

The Carpenters had five good years. ABBA was still huge after a decade and they continue to be much loved - look at all the insanely lucrative offers to get them to reunite.

I don't even particularly LIKE ABBA but the notion that they weren't a much bigger deal than the Carpenters is wrong...

Whether or not the Carpenters belong in the HOF is a different issue than which of those artists was the most successful.

According to the Wiki page linked earlier, Backstreet Boys sold as well as the Carpenters. Does this mean we can count on you to endorse their HOF induction when they become eligible?

    When was ABBA cool?
    Or James Taylor?
    Or Hall and Oates?
    Or Neil Diamond?
    Or Brenda Lee?

I understand that induction in the HOF is a moving target, but I don't think it's correct to assume that "coolness" is the uniting factor and the reason the Carpenters haven't been inducted.

Besides, didn't the Carpenters get their own little retro revival/"stamp of cool approval" with that "If I Were a Carpenter" covers album?

I don't buy that Abba sold more in the US than the Carpenters.
