I've never liked the term, in part because you have to explain what it means to people who aren't familiar with the process. I never use the word outside of this forum, either. I'd prefer just using the verb record, like I used to back when I would record LPs onto cassettes. But if I'm recording an LP onto a CDR specifically to "rip" the contents onto my computer to create digital files, I find myself using the term digitize.

I generally don't talk about the process of transferring vinyl to a digital format anyplace outside of this forum to begin with.

Sometimes my son will bring over something he has on vinyl and ask me to rip it for him, but that's about all I ever discuss outside of here.

Yeah...and vinyl is the plural of vinyl.

If it's going from vinyl to digital then I would call it a vinyl rip. To me a needle drop would be described as dropping a needle on the floor.

I use to say "digitizing my records" until I got into audio forums and still use that term outside these forums.

Why not? I find that most people are intrigued with the process.

The first time I ever noticed the term was in an interview with Bill Inglot in a Both Sides Now newsletter in the 90s.

Not seen that publication, presumably it's now defunct?

I know maybe a dozen people around the world who digitize their vinyl, none of them say 'needledrop'. Generally we talk about vinyl rips.

Most people for me? No. Other places, other interests. I don't talk much about the airline industry, politics, the financial services industry or a host of other subjects here and don't talk about music at those forums. Any real "discussion" of the process outside of any forum with family or friends usually results in uncomfortable looks for an exit or not so subtle changes in subject matter. A lot of those close to me "hope" that I will "finally get rid of those records" so I can turn that extra third room into a "bedroom" again. :sigh: I think they have put me on a watch list after I showed them how to apply Titebond II properly to an LP. :agree:

I want to do that to someone's record in front of them so bad just to see their reaction!

No idea how or when the term entered audiophile usage, but for years its been a term to describe what a DJ does when out record shopping. You don't generally have time (or a need) to listen to an entire tune, so you just listen to a few parts of it by 'dropping the needle' on to a few different spots on the record. For example, you might listen to the intro, the first drop, the second drop, the outro or whatever.

We’ve used the term for years in the post production business: It’s a method of music licensing that requires a producer to pay a fee each time they synchronize a tune with a TV show, film or commercial...
