What should Sony do with The Interview?

  1. While this whole stuation - from the hacking to the movie not being shown - is just wrong, it's overlooked that Sony is a corporation and they are certainly no bastions of freedom of speech. Neither are any of the other large studios. Their movies are product, often times made by committee with the goal of turnng a profit. Nothing at all wrong about that, but let's not forget we're talking about a commercial prodct here. Would there be the same level of outrage if, say, North Korea banned the sales of a Sony washer and dryer set?

Not at all. Nor was anyone up in arms that North Korea banned this movie from being shown in North Korea. But if North Korea started sending threats that certain washer/dryer's better not be sold here or else, yeah, I think people would be just as mad.

So you are saying the studios are anti-free speech? That is BS.

  4. This backer does not seem aware that the hackers for north Korea operate
This hacker is not well informed…he seems unaware that the CIA's belief is that it was North Korean agents working OUTSIDE NORTH KOREA who hacked Sony.

  5. Not at all. Jut saying it's commercial speech.

I don't think that's what he is saying. But it is true that many corporations, while always paying lip service to "free speech", are not true champions for it. $ always outweighs principle on the scale. Companies are more interested in their bottom line than in taking any stand. That is okay. I don't have a problem with Sony pretending to champion free speech because they think it makes them look good. The fact that it would make them look good means that enough consumers value it, and that is enough.

:agree: The animosity goes back to the 1930's....if not farther.

  9. I think what you're overlooking is that it was the American cinema chains who flinched first and refused to screen the movie, before Sony pulled it completely.

That's an interesting commentary. I hated it when Sony became a music/film company and have wished them out. I don't object to them as much now that they've destroyed, well at least diminished, their hardware business....

Well, I don't think they have the washer and dryer sets for sale there...
If I I can't talk about John Stossel, we certainly shouldn't be talking about Rachel Maddow!

Have a link to comments from Xeni directly?

"Looks like the "Guardians of Peace" scored another victory ... Sony quietly gave in to another hacker demand by wiping almost all traces of "The Interview" from its social media pages.

Hackers threatened top level Sony execs Friday saying, "We want everything related to the movie, including its trailers, as well as its full version down from any website hosting them immediately."

The movie studio almost immediately obliged ... the movie's Twitter page no longer has any tweets, the Facebook page has been deleted and all "Interview" footage has been wiped from its YouTube page.

    Sad."

Now I wish Sony had stood his ground so we could have gotten the dirt of these execs. It must be mighty juicy. I heard a well-known writer once mention that all the major porn sites on the web are actually handled secretly by the entertainment industry. Think about the billions that change hands. Do you think they'd leave that kind of bread in the pocket of some perv running a site out of his trailer in Arkansas? Can you imagine the headline: "Walt Disney Company owns "My Asian Doll" and "KinkyTeenHeaven .com"?

As has been reported for the last 24+ hours, Sony says they fully intended to release the movie. The way they made their initial announcement that they will not release it on Christmas was what got everyone thinking they capitulated. Sony should ne be blaming President Obama, the media, or anyone else for thinking they did.

I chalk it up to these media heads not knowing how to talk to the media.

We are not discussing politically partisan views of either of those two people, though. We are simply talking about her interview with someone with an opinion.
