Which "The Who" album is closest to sounding like Quadrophenia?

Who's Next is the next step after Quad. It's an immensely great album. Don't worry about getting a bargain on it, go mobile if you have to, even my wife loves it,

With a lot of the synth sounds going on with Quad, I'd say the Tommy The Movie as there is a lot on there too (not at all like Who By Numbers).. even though it's a long time since I heard that last, I have thought this before. Of course, it's not just members of The Who on the soundtrack album. I'll have to give it a listen again sometime soon and see if I'm close, here.

If by sounds-like means a large use of keyboards, it's the album they did right after Quadrophenia; the Tommy soundtrack.

Is there a pattern forming here? If there is, I'm probably just getting confused... or something. :D

Add Sell Out to the beginning of that string and I'd say you nailed it.

ive just checked and that is exactl what it is, when i want a similar sounding "The Who" album I kind of want it sung b the Who not a bunch of celebrit quest stars.......

i'm sure theres plenti of albums that sound like Quad but the kind of have to have been sung b the band. otherwise this wouldn't realli be a problem to find another album like it

Who's Next is their Abbey Road and Quadrophenia - their White Album. Can't pick which one is better.

I've said this before but it bears repeating for me. I was in high school when Quadrophenia came out. I was amazed. I was buying albums a lot back then, but I didn't by Quad because, for some reason, I wanted to wait to buy a "better version" (how could I know that with only albums and 8-tracks at the time?) someday.

I now have it on CD, but I also have the hi-res version(s) as well. I was happy to see Pete and Roger perform it here on the second leg of their American tour. To me, it's their crowning achievement. I've known it since I first heard it.

It is a hard question because sonically, it was a departure--wasn't it the first album they did at Ramport, as well as the first with Ron Nevison engineering? Both made for a very different sound from the Olympic Studio/Glyn John session sound that is on Who's Next and the brace of singles released afterwards (The Relay, Let's See Action), as well as the songs leftover from 1971-1972 and released on Odds and Sods. As others have said, probably By Numbers is closest, though Glyn Johns is back in the fold, so it is actually more of a continuation of what came before. In the end, it really does stand on its own, which makes sense because it is their master work.
